The one that completely blew my head off was Digital Mystikz' "Lost City". In fact all of DMZ002. I knew there was no going back after that...

I would have to say Kode 9 - Sniperdub
When I heard him play this on Groovetech.com 4 years ago it got me excited about where the 2step/garage sound was migrating too.
next up: Nothing in Providence RI - that's for sure ! fukkas !

i remember being impressed with dubstep all-stars vol.1 ..... i was like wtf is this ?!?!?

but i think the *first track that stood out to me was kode 9 - lost continent ..... then i quickly learned as much as possible .... and learned about the others ...

i was very excited when i found out that there were 2step/garage hybrids without the bling and the rapping and all that ...... i had heard some grime type things , but all the spitting annoyed me at times ...

que viva el dubstep ...

It was way back in 2000 for me, as i got Tempa 002 in my hands while checking for some more diverse garage/2step than the usual cheesy shit.

And this vinyl was really what i wanted to find, fresh beats and a sound that stood out from all the garage stuff that was around.

I wish I had a choon that got me hooked but don't. Some dark garage tracks with particularly mental basslines from a few years ago stood out at the time but I know no names. Although, hearing Request Line for the first time on Youngsta on Rinse was pretty seminal- the first dubstep track that really caught my attention above others. It makes sense cuz it is pretty much the biggest dubstep tune of all time (no?). Although, its appeal has mostly worn off by now.

I'd like to add "Sounds of da Future" from Menta. It wasn't my first one. But that one was da biggest one for me with that heavy bassline. I luv playing that tune. It just hooks many people to the sound.

For me it was Benny Ill & Kode9 - "Tales from the bass side"

http://www.tempa.co.uk/tunes/007b.asx

That tune got me thinking about the possibilities of where the breakbeat / 2-step garage sound of the time could be going.

Not really dubstep, but used to like the older tough 2-step sounds from people like Zed Bias (particularly Neighbourhood) and Wookie. Picked up quite a few of Landslide's 12"s on Hospital, and then started buying the early Tempa & Soulja (and Shelf Life) releases in 2002/3.

I wasn't aware at the time that this music was called dubstep (I suppose the term was only coined shortly before then), but soon figured it out and started looking for more. I guess the first 'real' dubstep records I bought was stuff like Fat Larry's Skank, or some of the older Darqwan tracks like Pipe Dreams.

My first impression was Tempa 003 by Horsepower Productions - A.What we do-remix / B.Vigilante (but the first serie, not the restock this year  ) and some early dubby step release like Ghost 004 by El-B and the Congo Fever on Shelflife 006 (Hyper-Hypa feat.MC Juiceman) - oooh.. that good old times :D
