Nah man, fairplay if u dont like it but still.. its easy to say something repeats itself if u dont listen to it very much, i mean how many people think that about electronic music??bibishte wrote:gypsies are very good musicians so I don't understand what's the problem.
popular (folklore) music in Balkans (Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and so on) is not gypsy music but it's closer to it (the instruments, the tempo and so on) than to irish music, american country music or chinese music, etc. so it's no big deal to confuse them.
I don't like this kind of music because it does not address to the intellectuals/young ppl, but rather to old people or to the people from the rural environment (peasants) with no college, big hopes, dreams and aspirations. its message is childish, it usually speaks about a shepherd who misses his ladyfriend, the musical theme is repeated over and over again and apparently the only human beings who are able to dance on it are my grandparents.
this kind of music will always be light and easy-going, aiming to be a "politically correct - let's not talk about anything relevant - let's not disturb anyone OR make them think too hard" type of music, just like any other folklore/popular music (from any corner of this world)
this kind of music will never have a deep, meditative or hardcore, drinking, let's do drugs and skank side, things that our generation expects from musicians. we are living in free times, there are no more communist/fascist regimes around to censor music and don't we just love progress/evolution when it comes to music?![]()
the discussion can go and on.
and u mustve never seen any balkan/gypsy bands live if u reckon that only ur granparents can dance to it, im 17 from england and i fuclking love it.. maybe not like the more traditional stuff but still..
i love all kindsa music and doing drugs and skanking to gypsyish music is fucking good fun! saw gogol bordelo the other day and they were actualy amazing, its just diferent. i can see ur point but give it a try, ull pribly like it!
i just think that Shukar Collective need to be mentioned in this thread.

ghandi - global beats
ghandi - Yeh Bhangra Hip Hop Bakwaas Kya Hai?
With respect to the earlier discussion, I too must admit an ignorance of the finer points of Balkan history and prehistory. I just came across this at a Balkan music festival in Berlin, including Boris Kovac and Ladaaba Orchesta, some huge brass collective with a single Davul providing the beat (awesome instrument) , followed by the Balkan Beats Soundsystem. Wicked night.
I guess my perspective on the gypsy thing is based on films like Latcho Drom (watch it if you can find it!) which definitely takes a turn through Balkan states, but shows the musical and cultural continuity along the Romany diaspora between the Punjab and Spain.
The way I see it, music for dancing shouldnt be caught up by political divides, and theres a definite compatibility between rhythms from all across the romany range, and even elements of swing, and jazz. Django probably had something to do with that...
My top tips - Shantel, Dunkelbunt, Typsy Gypsy (and the Balkan Hotstep Soundsystem), and OMFO (for electro weirdness).
If anyones in the Oxford area, Im doing a Balkan Basement night monthly at the Brickworks - Next one on the 13th Dec. Come and have a polka!

Anyone knows some good Balkan Music bands (even if they are not from the balkans) that sing in English?
(besides Balkan beat box, shantel, gogol...)
lol, he's not from japan man. He just moved there. But he's actually half romanian-half english. But I like his songs.
.

ask Balkanskyesoundc wrote:ok than can someone give me a reasonable point what exactly is Balkan Music.
for sure no, since it is a media manipulation and the free minds are eating it like hot breath.
