Dj Day Jobs..

Post by nerow » Tue Dec 02, 2008 8:02 pm

I've heard that Dubstep Dj's aren't bein paid as much as they should, apparently they're not gettin anywhere near to Andy C, Hype and the other DnB headliners..

This led me onto thinkin they must finance themselves some other way..

Anyone out there know what 9-5's sum dj's are doin?

yeah man itd be pretty hard to live solely from djing unless you got yourself a residency in a bar or something playing out with a guranteed amount of money per week.

Same goes for producers - only the ones who are selling fuckloads of tunes every time theyre released will be able to live off the proceeds, to everyone else itll be beer/ganj/charlie tokens.

Would still be good to see what people do when not djing though eh.

How long have Andy and Hype been in the game?

How longs Dubstep been around?

Think about it....

EDIT

A friend of mine was getting around 700 a set. He was doing 2 sets a week. Only when you are the cream of the crop can you look at it as a living.

No I think Andy comes from years of hard work and effort. He owns one of the most respected labels in DNB. He is known for his fast, tight, sick-as-fuck mixing. I'm pretty sure I read that he made Valley of Shadows (I think that's what its called, I am chung like.) when he was 16? When his name is on the list, the night is a sell out.

There is only a few people who have done what he has done. Just because someone is known for being a good DJ doesnt mean that there going to be rich. Label, sucessful nights, supreme productions, you can ask anyone and they will tell you Andy C is one of the greatest DJ's ever.

His selection can be weak at times though.

Seconded. No one can do what he does the way he does it. As much as theres definitely djs that id like to see over him he is the fucking man when it comes to crowd teasin' & pleasin'.

I know this and this wasn't my point

of course if you've been djing in a genre that is more commercial and has been around longer you are likely to get paid more than djing for an underground genre. If Andy dj'ed house he would easily be ranked alongside Tiesto and arman van helden, if not the best DJ in the world... but isn't it lucky for us that he decided to stick with drums

Anyone got any idea how much N-type or Caspa Rusko Skream etc cost for an hour?

My friend booked andy and Hype a couple of months back and its was £2500 for Andy for an hour

I'd estimate between 800 and 1000.

I would be extremely surprised if it were that high....

I would love to know. My guess is less than £400.

My guess is around 300 a set for the more well known djs in dubstep but i could be totally wrong,

I know quest/silkie plastician etc are full time music also i should imagine skream is and most of the top players, I heard stenchman speaking about his normal 9-5 tho as an example. It has crossed my mind tho, It must be such a good feeling wen you realise you can do music full time,

my dream! 8)

The big producers/DJ's who have albums/mix CD's out could probably ask for 800 - 1000. I could be completely wrong but I wouldnt be surprised. Caspa and Rusko have had a Fabric mix out which will have increased their price. Skream is classed as being the biggest guy in the scene so I would have thought his price would be similar. Being voted best british DJ will have helped as well.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Drum and Bass Dj's and Mc's get free drinks along with the pay for the night and that Dubstep Mc's / Dj's are lucky to get the free drinks let alone the payment??

But most importantly lets find out some 9-5's!!!
