LAYERING SYNTHESIS

have jus got into layering bass,have reason 4 at present,love the malstrom love the subtractor but only seem to find one sort ov deep wub sound,have done some reseach and found its about layering,could anyone steer me in right direction of how to do this. Bein that there is 'i presume' 2 serperate sound makers in both malsrom and subtraktor do i use both of them?currently am only usin the one and am jus lost for different sounding basslines..help :o

Combinator + 2 or more of your desired synths + EQ and filtering = good results!


Mal is really great for this, I have made basslines with 6-7 different instances of Mal open and with the right filtering it sounded great!


On a basic level you'll want..

a low end bass (sub) and a mid end bass (more sound to it, than a feel)

So basically, get the sub how you want it.. then build a mid end bass with a lot character to it, get the filters right on both and it 'should' sound pretty good.

What I find for wobble.. is if you make a sub.. get it wobbling then create another synth (of the same, like another malstrom) and copy the sub patch over and start working on a more middy sound then make one of the knobs in the combinator do the rate for both.. another knob for saturation for the sub and another for shift on the mid..

for the wobble u were clear about duplicating the malstrom too then make a mid range.for what you said above about low end, mid range, and top end , am i doing the same(duplicating) ? say finding a sub(low end), duplicating then tweaking to a mid range,then playing with the combinator? i am geting confused cus in both the subtractor and the malstrom theres like 2 seperate box's that you can make 2 different sounds from?

They're oscillators! Check the help file in reason its the best built-in manual into any DAW ive tried!!

i duno if u alredi know this but if ur looking for the quickest way to change the sound create a skream 4 distortion unit on the synth. that shud start u off, combined with the 30 odd preset wave types on the osscilator,not getting the same type of bass sound all the time.

basically what he is sying is,

you make your sub bass in a malstrom using one or two of the oscillator's

once you have that wubbing like you want

get another malstrom go back to the sub bass right click it go "copy patch", then on the second one right click and go "paste patch",

change the oscillators from sine/triangle whatever your using for sub to say a saw or square wave, detune it, maybe take it up an octave, distort it, filter it make it sound interesting and you'll have a deep wub bass with an interesting distorty bit over the top, repeate until happy.

stick it in a combinator link the lfo rate to a combinator button (think you can assign two to the same button) and you'll have your wub sound.

A tip for subs:

Try running your sub through the Scream 4 distortion set on tape mode. the second knob (param 2 I think it's called?) is compression. Gives it a little warmth and makes it a bit louder. :)

ah tape distortion, nothing beats analog tape overdub though even though some plugins come close

nice one peeps, was propa gettin confused with the 2 oscillators! didnt know if layering had to be done in jus the one malstrom.obviously not...i take it im starting with the combinator cus have done abit ov researching.so today i will have my first attempted at creating my love and the best fing ov all is that it should come all out ov 1 key...holy smokes 8)

I've recently being working on splitting my bassline's in logic, currently i'm bouncing down my riff to audio, copying it to three audio tracks, splitting the tracks into three frequencies and applying differnet effects / compression to each track.

But surely if I were to lead up three synths, arm each in logic, and hit a key on my midi keyboard it would give the same effect as what you guys are doing in logic?

Is either way the right way? Would they both produce the same results?

no not really, similar effect but wouldn't sound the same unless all three had the same patches and you filtered each one accordingly.

which is pointless and uses more resources than needed.

:evil: i have tried and failed ....how the hell do you wire them into the combinator,tried starting with combinator-create-maltrom,created another malstrom but the synths are serperate and not playing at same time .,,,ne 1 plse put me out ov my measury

Load combi - press shift and load a mal - and do it again (pressing shift)

this will load up 2 mals unwired.

Load a audio splitter / merger (pressing shift)

Press tab


Load them into the splitter like this...



Note: If you just want to use the 1 oscilator then you have to have it Mono (just the L going to the splitter) as far as I know.. but I only always use 2 oscilators. Although if you're making sub bass, you'll want it mono anyways!

Why not use a mixer instead of the merger?

some nice tips in here... i need to mess around more, i want to create my own multi oscillator disgusting sound...but my sounds always end up being some thick gloomy shit. I got nothing but respect for coki right now.

Well you can wire up to combinator if you want to use the assignable knobs on it.
