i think it's hard to resolve the logic of not having a ban really.... even as a smoker i find it hard not to agree with the current ban as it stands:

if i was being exposed to a noxious and carcinogenic gas say, via an air conditioning system pumping it out into the room, that I involuntarily inhaled everytime i went in a bar, club or restaurant - i wouldn't be happy about it at all... if it was e.g. a clear corporation that could be blamed for deliberately exposing people to this with full awareness of the health effects, they would be in serious shit for doing something like this and could expect to be sued, if not taken to court. how can i then justify that people who don't want to inhale my exhaled smoke should do just because I want to have a puff?

Making it totally illegal is removing my right to smoke and pollute my lungs as much or as little as i want to, but making it legal in bars and restaurants is removing a non-smokers right to not inhale a proven life threatening vapour.....

unless someone can think of something better, i'm certainly happy with the current situation.

Haha, you beat me to it mate! I was listening to a debate about this on the radio this morning.

I honestly don't see that it's going to do anything. I mean, just cos you can't see them, doesn't mean that you're not going to ask for them. Even now, when cigs are on display, you still have to ask the person at the counter for the cigs, and you'll still have to do that.

Be shit if the rule affects proper tobacconists (spelling?) though. I suppose they do still provide tobacco, but I'd always seen them as...'luxury tobacco' (what with cigars and whatnot) as opposed to 'habitual tobacco'. Be a shame if they get hit.

What do you reckon, Tobacco Industry spokesman LEQ?

can't see it having a massive effect, but it's not an entirely outrageous suggestion is it? minimal inconvenience to smokers and (minimal) potential to stop people starting

Hah, cheers Matt.

Well, viewing this through cigarette smokers eyes and I can see where you are coming from pk, but from specialists ( I work in the Cuban Cigar industry ) then it's big, as cigars are a good sold by sight as much as taste.

Specialist tobacconists are going to get hit. By Specialist I'm talking a retailer whereby 50% of their profits are directly from the sale of tobacco goods, ie cigars, pipe tobacco. These are usually small and rely on having goods on display, unless they get an exemption then they are in trouble. Other European countries who have similar bans do give exemption so hopefully that'll will happen here but I'm not holding out much hope for it.

Fucding the shop refit will be too much for some ( remembering that specialists are smal) , where they will physically keep the stock if it's not allowed on site will also be a big question.

For cigarettes I don't see much change, but the little independant tobacco shop selling a range of cigars, loose leaf as wel as cigarettes is going to have a tough time.

Also, I don't recall the tobacco displays having any effect on me whatsover when I first tried smoking, so I'm not too sure on that line of reducing the age group of 11-16 taking up smoking.

This - totalfeckingly!

I was so much more psyched by the shop owner realising i was underage and wanting to card me. Never once between the ages of 12 and 16 was i EVER ID'd for cigarettes....
In the end, it's the guy/girl between you and the cigarretes who is the one with the true power to stop you from smoking at that age - not some bloody wall that just makes it seem even more illicit and exciting..
