yeah thats what i mean i did say that things need labeling for discussion and thatJackmaster wrote:Sometimes you have to label these things to discuss them though. then again what do i funkin' know.
Wonky!

It's just instrumental hip-hop to me, and there's some excellent stuff about. It not really anything 'new' it's more that there seems to be a new wave of producers with a similar sound aesthetic breaking out at the moment that for ease of discussion has been termed 'wonky'. I find it hard to get too worked up about the name, at least it's better than 'skweee'.

He may have a unique sound, but it's still rooted in hip-hop, with influences from electro and people like autechre, dabrye etc. It's just the development of what's come before.Jackmaster wrote:Its defo something new. I don't see the parallel or the need for a sticky. Seems to make some sort of link that I can't really see any connection apart from Hyperdub and Flying Lotus playing alongside Kode 9 at a couple of dubstep dances.
Some of it is alright, but I am positive that this is the new scene of choice for the type of trendsters who stumbled into FWD>> on Ketamine last year on a Friday and started all of these 'Are Caspa and Rusko killing dubstep?' type threads. The fact that people think it's somehow mad cool to refer to Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke as Flylo and Hudmo make me laugh.
It's a sound that's caught the ears of a few people and as a true fan of music, I'd agree with Rekordah's thing about it being post-Dilla beat continuum or whatever.
It's dance music in a sense, but personally I can't feel it. It's too unpredictable to go into that kinda raving autopilot. I'll be listening, but this stuff seems like it's trying a little too hard to be out there.
I've got to big up anyone who's doing anything new, though. Too many people on the retro ting, not enough people moving forward.

I personally feel that labelling is lazy journalism and to a certain extent can do more damage than good (e.g. the whole new rave thing.. lets not go in to that)Jackmaster wrote:Sometimes you have to label these things to discuss them though. I know what I like to buy without having to categorise it / draw a parallel with how it differs from other genres. But essentially all journalism is shortcuts, so i guess it would be unfair of me to treat the term 'wonky' as being any different to the thousands of other terms in use.

I really don't think the ketaming crew have latched on to this at all, i think it would spin peoples heads too much.Elementalism wrote: Some of it is alright, but I am positive that this is the new scene of choice for the type of trendsters who stumbled into FWD>> on Ketamine last year on a Friday and started all of these 'Are Caspa and Rusko killing dubstep?' type threads. Given this thread was started by dubway and having a look at people who in the past have show an appreciation - i doubt most of the people who like this sound are of the mindset that the sub soldiers / dubpolice crew are straight killing dubstep off, or are people that have just jump on trendy bandwagons.
i dont think the abbreviatons are said to make people look cool - more that they are just quick to say and are phenetically simple (having said that they are pretty cool sounding)
What about those people who don't like to dance to predicable rhythms all the time?Elementalism wrote: It's dance music in a sense, but personally I can't feel it. .
I don't think this stuff is trying hard to be out there - i think of recent times dance orientated music has been trying to play it safe, inorder to clamour for commercial success.
It is all about what is says on the section divider for Wonky in Rooted records, too funny.
blessed is the sound of the operator

there is no WONKY. this shit is NOTHING new. NOTHING. NEW. ABOUT IT. it's as old as i am. it's older. listen to the work of raymond scott. no not the shit that everyone played out, remixed with their crappz dilla tribute. the stuff from the 50s. it's all there, raw beats and far out electronica. the blueprint is as old as the first synthesisers that were made. go listen to sun ra or maybe silver apples. that should get you started.

oh yeah, so in terms of the sounds, well now i guess there are kind of "crews" around the world with their own regional take on it. so the jazzy sport crew has always sounded in the tradition of pete rock and dilla. whereas in scotland they hail from a long lineage of electro, so their sound is kinda mad and dayglo and neon and freshhhh. nothing wonky. just the revised art of beatmaking for the new generation of blazed out listeners.
and it's all about doing your own thing, not about trying to do the same sound as everyone else
it's hip hop, jim, just not as we know it.

its almost 2009..dudes were makin this type of thing in 2000..dont think it needs to be debated or analysed...the media gave it a name as the more producers came out of the myspace woodwork..a commuinity was developed, good records came out.
i really like how its still original and artists havent conformed to a formulaic way of making a big record..loads of people doing a good job of sounding different from each other.

yeah take mark for example. been making tunes for fuckin years. 313 is harking back to some of the first records he made, which had an electro/detroit feel to em.incyde wrote:harmonic 313
big up ballers > feelin him. and yes and i agree, lots of artists doing a good job of sounding different from each other. and that should be celebrated. and as well, it's just such a nice group of people who are really down to earth, many of whom are starting to do very big things.
