Seriously, though, if someone wants to point out some older house that has similarly messed up drums to African Worrior or Siegalizer and stays ruff and urgent rather than going into muso jazziness then I'm all ears.

Wouldn't go that far but I really don't like it!

I've got a few bits of funky on vinyl and it sounds no different to some funky house I was DJing a few years back.

I can see why people like it but its by no means a new exciting genre.

im not a fan to be honest, but like every other genre i would never write it off as a load of shit.

as i dont really like the stuff ive heard so far (not really dark enough for my tastes), i havnt bothered to dig, so wouldn't surprise me if there was some decent stuff out there and there probally is.

What the hell is "Funky"?

If it's not Chicago House, or Detroit Techno, it should probably find a new name tbh.

sounds a lot like house music to me

Post by marigirl » Tue Dec 30, 2008 11:10 pm

But then as a young kid, House music was my first love so...I would have to say TO EACH HIS OWN, right?

But it would be annoying to hear this at a Dubstep party...eesh. :E:

TBH, I know what Funk is, and I know that Funky should be followed by the name of a genre, not BE the name of a genre. Simply calling something "Funky" and saying that is a genre is a blatant attempt at people to pretend they are founding something new or unique, and in terms of music that is a MAJOR fucking claim. I haven't heard nary a single novel concept in music since Dubstep began. And even then, it was blatantly a sub genre until it really developed into a sound of it's own. Even today people argue over the status of Dubstep as a legitimate Parent genre of music.

I own a lot of Monolake that is more Dub and more Step than most Dubstep being released today, and it came before all of this... so we could argue that as well. All I'm saying is that calling something by a new name sounds like people trying to take credit for something they didn't invent or innovate.

And if it's a new genre, then it doesn't belong in the DUBSTEP forum. That is my main contention. It's either a new genre and doesn't belong in this forum, or it's a Subgenre, in which case bleh... Dubstep is Dubstep is Dubstep.

Shattup!

Genre police! Word police!?! Nod off noddy! surface pension, you know fuck all but you feel as tho you can tell people what they should / shouldn't do? If its not from Chicago its not House?

Funky is just a word that got used, in one way its been used as substitution for another word which can't really be used on flyers etc.

No central board of new genres sat down & said 'this will be funky' its just a word people used... much like tunes getting called u kno 'dubby 2 Step' No one is claiming its a brand new thing, much like dubstep its just another mutation - if you don't like it, ignore it, much like I do with 90% of 'dubstep'

what he said. surface tension there is so much wrong with your post that i couldn't be bothered to comment. i reckon if all of us spent more time listening to/making music (me included) this kind of bullshit discussion wouldn't exist and all the music would be better and there would be good vibes...up to a point

I'm not too big on this sound myself, and I don't claim to posess an intricate knowledge of it, but here goes.....

Rather than being a term which has risen to popularity via being a buzzword for journos, or a term that has been pushed by the scene's key players, I'm pretty sure "Funky" is a term risen fairly naturally from dropping the "House" from "Funky House". Primarily just for the ease of saying it. I don't think many of the scene's key players view what they're doing as a new genre, infact most don't seem to claim that what they're doing is dissimilar or separated from House music. Saying that though, It clearly has become a rather large buzzword of late - some people clearly do see it as somewhat removed from House music - and in some cases, are hailing it as a new innovation.

Now, in my view, I find it hard not to see that the shortening of "Funky House" to "Funky" runs deeper than just making it easier to say, at least for a proportion of it's audience. House, and 4x4 on the whole, carries with it a rather large stigma in certain circles and in some instances "House" is seen by some as a dirty word - in the UK at least. There are some longtime House fans out there who are enjoying this recent strain, no doubt, but I think it's obvious that the dropping of the H word has made this music much more accessible to a large chunk of it's new found audience. And I think that goes some way as to explaining why the sound is being so hyped-up. But that's not to say I think that this new audience for House music is a bad thing - far from it. I just find it an interesting process.

One thing i'll admit though - whilst the sound is not new (nor notably innovative IMO) the audience, vibe and atittude is. The collision between House and the attitude and swagger of UK Garage and Grime is undeniably interesting, and to play devils advocate - I'd say it's one of the main reasons why alot of the forum bods have jumped on it.

I wasn't gonna, but fuckit.

Virgo - Go Wild Rythm Track (not the guy from Notts tho  )

Lil Louis - Video Clash

tbh there are so many Jack tracks with deep, deep drums its not funny, no muso jazziness to be found wotsoever!

Karizma - Too Many To Name but; Twyst This, Broken Beats, Darqness - all of which are still big tunes on the UK scene.

Francois K - Edge Of Time (Todd Terry Remix)

DJ Gregory - Labrinythe

Fanatix - High Grade

Conan Liquid - Bring It Back

I'm not even gonna drop the names of some Abicah / Yoruba Soul tunes here, or the South African bangers... shit gets deep!

Its dumb tho, its not about having sets full of tunes like 'African Worrior' & 'Siegalizer' - thats the buety of House music its wide open, it makes the cloistered dead end of goose-step-techno seem sssooooo DRY!

Basically; don't slag off House music because of your perception of what House music is, everything you thought you knew about House music is wrong!

Definitely some great stuff mentioned there. It's still more, well, produced than some of the funky stuff though, which is basically the appeal of a lot of it to me (of course a lot of African stuff is similar, and Apple claims this is a major influence on his style). Personally, I still think funky is more revolutionary as a social phenomenon than a musical one, but a lot of the music coming out of it is really, y'know, good. And I love the dubstep that foreshadowed/is influenced by it (Left Leg Out, the Kode 9 stuff on Box of Dub/Den of Drumz, recent D1). Also, if it gets dubstep fans/producers to stop instinctively writing off house, that can only be a good thing.

Some of it is shite, some of it is awesome, but mostly it's a bit meh. I do have the odd guilty pleasure though
