logic pro 8

Post by steveydubz » Mon Jan 05, 2009 12:16 pm

easy people,

i just got logic 8 and dont have a clue where to start! i've got as far as using the apple loops but other than that i don't have a clue!

Can any one point me in the direction of any decent tutorials?
yes i have googled it and yes i have found loads but imo most of these r crap because the cam recording isnt even focused on the screen so i cant see what they are on about!
So are there any people would recommend for a complete beginner to logic?

I would like to know how to insert my own drum hits and also i've got a MPD24 that id like to hook up but again i dont have a clue!

If you want to program your own beats then go to track, choose instrument channel and create. Then in the I/O section of the channel select ultrabeat which is logics drum machine and you'll be able to load in your own samples and program them using the step sequencer in ultrabeat. If you plug in your MPD via USB then it should automatically pick it up and you'll be able to play the drum samples through it. hope this helps

With my midi keyboard it was just a case of plugging it in and it worked so i would check the manual that came with your MPD and same with your other controller

Take a few days and work through the "Logic Quick Start Guide" (the thinnest book) that comes with it. I know, it seems like a pain and you just want to "get right to it." But believe me, you'll learn more this way than picking through YouTube tutorials. They've made it extremely easy to follow and I'd recommed anybody start there.

experiment, read the manual, logicprohelp.com, SF logic ninja on youtube, and use that nifty SEARCH button above you since this has been discussed, and the same answers given, about 4500 times.

The "Logic Quick Start Guide" helped me a lot as well, that's a good start.

I think another important thing is to explore for yourself. It's just a few months since I got my version of Logic, I've had patience, clicking on different buttons, trying different things out etc. Record a few melodies, add some drum patterns, perhaps try out making an awesome bassline. Just sit a few hours creating some random music, you can always improve it, add effects, change the tune in a hundreds ways. Good luck mate!

The ESX24 is an easy to use sampler, not hard to figure out at all - really easy to load a bunch of samples & assign to keys on the keyboard. Ultrabeat is a beast. The ES2 synth is rad, and again easy to use. The ESM can create some serious subbass without even trying.

As far as programming in the drums, my suggestion would be to play them in & adjust via the piano roll. If you don't have a midi keyboard, you can get the onscreen virtual keyboard up by pressing the capslock key......HTH

had logic for about 3 weeks

been working on it for a while, it doesn't seem to be coming to me as quickly as other software did (previous reason, reaper, cubase user)

the main problem i'm having is finding a sampler where i can change the key of my samples in the piano roll. i'm able to load samples in, but i'd like to be able to drag audio samples into a sampler quickly and easily, then simple change their pitch/velocity etc. like in kontakt or nnxt.

i've read the getting started booklet and have been working my way through the manuals!

Use the ESX24 then, I believe it's what you are after. All you have to do is load a sample, choose how to assign it to the keyboard & then play it like any of the other instruments would be played on a keyboard. Velocity will be automatable in the piano roll, you can use the piano roll to change pitch, or just play the sample in different octaves via a keyboard etc.

either set the number of possible voices (on the front panel) down to 1, or edit the patch and make sure 'one shot' is not checked. then the sample will just play for the length of your midi note (but yeah make sure the release is down on your amp envelope)
