I never really got the hype around Big L, he had a few good 12"s (mainly the DITC ones), but the album was patchy and he never really engaged me lyrically.

My father has one quote he abuses constantly.

"Yeah, let's get all hyped up over Big L. While Lord Finesse gets no love for being an actually dope MC."

It should be noted there's no emote for the screwface he applies to this quote.

while big l and lord finesse are both punchline kings, big l had more of an "oooooh shit!!!" kind of delivery and voice and lord finesse was more of a "haha that was pretty clever" smooth delivery, so big l has more of an impact on the listener and therefore people think hes better. finesse is dope though no doubt.

your dad is cool though. my dad listens to... well... dad rock. he did seem to enjoy blaq poet - bang this when i played it in the car, though...

I love both of em.

Must admit I prefer Big L, but Lord Finesse is still sick.

Their punchlines and multiple rhyming styles were quite similar, I mean, Finesse once dropped this on a track;

"But at a party, I'm quick to rag a mic
And brothers can't see me with a satellite
So those who want to battle me, step up lively
"A bad motherfucker" is a few words to describe me
I rise instead of sinking, I use my head for thinking
I'm leaving opponents all dead and stinking"

Which could have EASILY been a Big L lyric... but L slightly edges it for me.

You can kick back and chill to a Finesse album but a Big L album you can dig out any day of the week, no matter how you feel.

finesse -
Now it's the funkyman, and ****** can't see me
When I grab the mic you better play the wall like graffiti
Cause whether fast or somethin slow
I'm bad like Michael Jackson, only thing is, I'm fuckin, though

Lord Finesse also an utter badman!

His production and dj skills off the hook too.

"So all ya new jacks kickin' wack raps
It's a fact that
I'll be on your fuckin' back like a napsack
It ain't shit you can tell me
Cause bitches still jock me without a motherfuckin' LP"

However pon fi microphone "Let em have it L"

Lord Finesse is one bad motherfucker on the buttons but never revved my engine as far as him on the mic is concerned...

if you don't rate Finesse you should check the SBX battle DVD where he takes on Percee P. I don't think you can underrate him based on that performance.

as for Big L, i'd have to go for Ebonics. clever piece of writing that.
