I have a rather unique perspective... my child that is due later this year will be of mixed race. To an extent, it make me happy to know that there is precedent now for there to be no spoken barrier to that child becoming President of the United States. It's a big day for anyone who is of any minority.
At the same time, he didn't run as a man of mixed race, but as a black man if anything. Bittersweet as well, because I think his policies are terrible and that his voting record is pretty unassuming. Also the expectations for him are too high for anyone to meet or exceed. I hope for the best, but I expect the worst. I have no belief that he will be any better than Bush in the end. Same cabinet, same war czar, same belief that Government will solve problems.
Here we go. Let's see the change. 150 Million dollars that he is spending on Inaugural balls... what recession? My happiness is that Bush is no longer in office and there is the potential to arrest that fucker. But that won't happen at all. Just a depressing, anti-climactic day.

Support from abroad from this direction.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrap Obama!
Big speech and considering I had to lip-read most of it, I actually had fucking chills looking at that crowd.
It's beautiful to have someone speaking as the President of the United States that speaks about things in a way I can relate to. That's a bigger thing than him being a Black Prez for me.
Large up America. Give the man all the support he needs to do a good job.

First off, congratulations!!!Thanks for making another one of us!Surface_Tension wrote:I have a rather unique perspective... my child that is due later this year will be of mixed race. Well, while I don't share your sentiments(I started this thread without the intention of political opinion, only excitement that the first minority had been sworn in as president),I still have the same fears you do.There is always that chance with any political leader, that chance that they will turn out to be the same. But even on his racial background alone,he is different.Things are already different now.
And being of mixed race myself,I think my perspective as just as unique,if not more affected by this.
Look bro,I'm an old school activist.I've been arrested, beat up,and scorned for my leftist ideals as well.Yes,I am jaded too.But as a person of colour, this is a big part of why I became an activist. For racial equality,to get to the point that an American of ANY minority, could make it to the White House and beyond.I would be just as excited if Obama was Hispanic,Asian,Native American,as much as I am that he is of mixed race.Even in his speech,he rarely touched on "his blackness".The media did.And they did so heavily, even primarily showing only black people instead of the fabric of all races in every major city in the country. But Obama mentioned everyone from Blacks to Jews,Whites and Asians,Native Americans to Eastern Indian. In fact,in all these threads about Obama in the past few months, you are the only one who keeps saying how "his blackness" was the key factor in the presidential race, even though people, both in the US and the UK have disagreed with you on this.
I respect your opinion man.I even said that your contradicting nature was part of your charm in the appreciation thread. But some of us here are actually very happy about this.So why ruin our excitement with your fatalist views?Stop being a party pooper and just realise that this historic moment is paving a future for your forthcoming child that I wasn't lucky to have.

Did you see that crowd?
There were more white people on the stage with Obama than in that entire crowd. I understand that the buildings they are moving into and giving speeches in front of were actually built by Michelle's ancestors, literally. But it was just as history making that Bush took office, etc..
the point I think, is that we need to get beyond the fact that it's a big deal that Obama has skin at all. He's just another dude taking office. I'd be more excited if the last 2 years of me watching the news weren't about how it'd be a big deal if Hillary or Obama won and took office. Fatigue has set in big time for a lot of people. Today I am more pissed that I can't really look at a newspaper or watch television without hearing or seeing it.
What is Michelle wearing, what are they eating, which Jonas Brothers CD are the kids listening to on their Ipods... meh. All that matters are his policies. Content of character, not the color of the skin as the old axiom goes. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm pissing in someone's cheerios but there are people dying, starving, jobless and Bush is flying away and we're talking about how it's a peaceful transfer of power... Motherfucker should be in handcuffs being frogmarched to Gitmo and waterboarded.
There was no double bird strike on Marine One when Bush left town. Just a let down. I'm trying to see the good in this. Pheasant and Duck for their luncheon, 150 Million for parties, 100k to decorate the residence... and this is the first day. People have real problems and this is no time for a victory lap or a celebration. The election is over but the task is still at hand. That helicopter should have rushed him immediately to the White House and to his staff room to begin working.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!!!
we need someone who will stand up and say, fuck parting, fuck the redecoration bullshit, we need to seriously debug this errored piece of software known as the government and lets start by making lobbyists, criminals.
then a follow up move of a massive deportation of all the illegals followed by tax benefits for companies who fire illegals and hire Americans. thus providing the companies with the ability to pay American workers higher wages. that will bring the money back into our failing economy instantly and destroy our current unemployment rate.
too easy when corruption isn't part of the equation isn't t?

Yeah, and while your at it why don't you destroy the infrastructure and economy in their home countries so they don't have any jobs to go back to! Oh, wait, its already done? How pre-emptive.Threshold Collective wrote:

Well,at least we can agree on this. But that's the media for you. They still have to entertain the clueless and/or apathetic people out there. Not everyone in America is as fired up about politics as you are(or myself). And that's okay.I don't hate on them because they aren't.And you may(or not,if you don't watch outside media) have noticed the reports coming in from around the world, talking about world peace and unity.America's media isn't the only one.And this does affect the entire world.Bush wanted to seperate us as a world power,Obama(even in his speech) speaks of bringing people together.Surface_Tension wrote:Did you see that crowd?

But it's still exciting nonetheless. No,skin colour shouldn't be an issue. And Obama really didn't make it one.But in this country, colour is an issue. It is what keeps whites at the top and minorities at the bottom. It's what keeps nice neighbourhoods primarily white and the ghettos and barrios overcrowded with minorities. It's what keeps the majority of homeless minorities. And it's why hate crimes against minorities are treated as a misdemeanor, while white NY,Chicago,Baltimore,Detroit, and LA cops get off scot-free killing unarmed minorities. These are also serious and immediate issues that need to be addressed, regardless of what you think.
Dude, you really need to get over yourself.Skin colour may not affect you,but it certainly has affected those of us who are of the minority persuasion, and has affected us for generations.Obama is not just another president. No matter how even he looks at it,he's still the first to break an age-old tradition of keeping the White House white.
