Is dubstep cannibalizing itself?

Post by mayhem » Thu Jan 15, 2009 10:29 am

Has the time come for dubstep when sounds are pigeon holed into subgenre's like dnb?

I see, from my limited perspective, tunes being on the dub/techno - wobble - reggae - dnb/tech tip.

I guess it was only a matter of time before things started to fall into place.

I guess the most important aspect is that if DJ's mix things up and play it across the board or whether they line it up to kill the dance floor with anthem-esque jams to please the masses.

Just some food for thought. Probably been written here before, but there's no way I could search for a similar topic.

My opinion is that some producers tend to follow a more safe pattern in production, such as wobble bass etc.

But I don't think dubstep has pigeon holed at all really, it has such unique structure and flow that's based on a really free idea sortof.

I agree, it is ultimately up to those who spin the plates.

I'd love for it stay as open as possible, sub-genrefication has made DnB, at least in NYC, a very sad state of affairs.

Like any genre, it's both shit and really good.

It's just up to you to take your sweet time looking for the tunes worth listening too, radio shows, mixes etc..

Diversity is what makes Dubstep my favorite dance music.

Milanese
2562
Kode9
Burial
Shackleton
Scorn
Scuba
The Bug
Joker

...and the list can go on...

Serisously. Last nght, they droped a track with industrial-goth kind of lyrics over it, and the next one was a hip-hop/dubstep mixture. Can't see any style of music where you can hear such variety in less than 5 minutes.

The best DJ is the one who knows how to spin variety, and can play unknown tracks and the biggest hits in the same mix.

I personally am in heaven when I hear one of these The Bug tracks and see everybody get into an uncontrolled madness. There's nothing wrong with playin the most loved tunes, as long as you don't play just that.

I keep a varied bag but mostly the dancefloor bangers get played. Crowds are tough these days. You play a tune that is a little laid back and all of a sudden everyone needs to visit the barkeep. Honestly I don't blame DJ's for the volume of wooble out there. That is what these people want!

I defo think things are splitting off into subgenres. Just because we don't have cute little names for each one doesn't mean it isn't happening! But yeah all you can do is encourage DJ's to keep it varied but don't lose the dancers over it.

lol.

just because there have been trends doesnt mean the sound has taken a pit stop. loads of innovative music out there, just gotta look for it.

besides, sub genre or trends or woteva, djs play everything and its great.
