Respect

Post by johnboy01 » Mon Jan 26, 2009 6:40 am

You're wise my dubstepping friend. I am perpetuating the very arrogance that I was complaining about. Im not usually such a prejudiced dink. I guess I just don't really understand the whole hippie thing. I think of dubstep and the whole dance music culture as its own unique and distinct movement. I don't want our presence to be mushed together with other musical movements from the past (movements that are associated with hippies, for example). This thing is ours, and ours alone. it's relatively young and it's the sickest shit we've seen yet. A lot of the sounds I love in dubstep are so great because they sound so futuristic and synthetic, like distress signals or auto distruct sequences. Hippy-ism is from the past and way more organic in its nature. not only that, it's not even from our generation! WE ARE THE FUCKING FUTURE, MAN! Lets leave our own distinct mark. why would you wanna go around trying to recreate something wak from the past when there's all this dope cutting edge shit all around us?

when it comes down to it though, i don't really care who im dancing next to as long as they appreciate it as much as I do. im just totally jazzed about dubstep and i think it's a significant thing that deserves some respect and attention.

And thanks so much for giving me props on the mix. I really appreciate it. It means a lot.

woah! :o

just for the record, i've lived all my life in london, bristol and brighton and and been to many nights at all three.... and you get every mix and match of every type of person there - that is danceheads, metalheads, hippies, dnb heads, wide boys, pilled out students, rude boys, rastas, riot grrrls, chavs, garage heads, ket heads, dread heads, shaved heads, purple heads, blue heads and everything in between....
This is a major part of what is so down to earth about the dubstep scene and the community it brings - it's diversity, friendliness and cosmopolity (not sure that's a word i may have just made it up!). It's about the music and enjoying it- not about what you wear, how you look, what drugs you take or how ridiculous you may dance (tbf i think most of us look pretty silly mid brock, but we're enjoying it eh?)

I, for one, am counting down the days to come check out the scene in this wicked city of yours. Your nights look sick :D

:o :o :o :o :o :o

Johnboy you sound like you have some pent up aggression man.

Honestly, this music, as has been mentioned by everyone else is like a melting pot of influences from other genres and vibes...Seems like you'd prefer exclusivity. What makes Vancouver's scene so special is that people come from all walks, both the fans of it and the people involved in doing shows, producing, DJing etc.

I came to the scene as a relative outsider, and was embraced by the people and given every opportunity to prove myself, which was a VERY refreshing thing coming from my dnb roots.

Johnboy, you should be happy to live in such a great city, with such a great dubstep scene. It's better here than most anywhere else you could imagine!

Come check out our night sometime, you'll be pleasantly surprised...top shelf vibes and the freshest beats in town. 8)

Peace

i admit, i was pretty wonked when i wrote that. but still, you have to admit that hoola hoops at a dubstep show is pretty wack, man.

thanks for inviting me to your night. i will scope that shit out for sure.

ps:

you're not using a hoola hoop right this second, are you?

just kidding.

peace.

lol

i am listening tho...

i wouldnt say its so much hippies that are the problem, its the scumbag drug users who are just there cuz its good music to get fucked on.

altho i would LOVE to spin a set for a bunch of fucked up w00ks and absolutely slay them into the ground with some dirt
your quote is perfect! im guilty of having that attitude for sure. Im so fuckin underground Im in a fuckin magma chamber byatch! Im fully laughing at myself right now!

don't get me wrong. i like pills and powder as much as the next guy, but that's not what makes the scene what it is. It's the craziness of this music that we all love. Besides, what self respecting individual has time to do drugs and be sketchy all the time? I turned 25 today. I've got shit to do, man! In my spare time I just smoke trees and sift through singles until I find a gem. Then I mix. dubstep is just so awesome and over the top fresh. i shouldn't hate on the poor hippies. they're just so damn filthy though. Forgive me.

last 2 pages of this thread are hilarious btw

the lines of youth subcultures have been blurred together with pop culture (omgsellout) so much in the past 10 years that it seems insane to hold on to that elitism. dubstep represents that diversity to the point it can become difficult to categorize. you call it "synthetic" & "dance music".. i call it "organic" & "hip hop". and we're both right

my two most important points:
- be glad violence doesn't exist within this scene
- doesn't matter to me what your haircut is or what drugs you took.. if you have an aversion to deodorant please don't dance all night long

and BTW, i think as long as these "hippies" treat dubstep ethics with respect its fine. the minute the respect goes out the window, so do they.
