I wouldn't say we are intolerant though, it's unfair and untrue. I've worked quite a few different jobs already working with a wide variety of people. At worst you get miseducation. You vary rarely get actual active, vehement intolerance.
miseducation is much much worse than active vehement intolerance

I asked for curry sauce on my chips once in a London chip shop, they angrily said "we're a chip shop, we don't do curry sauce, we never have done and never will do" ......that told me.

The curry sauce at my chippy tastes like the Chicken katsu curry sauce from Wagamamas.

id say its perhaps less intolerance and more ignorance

they just aren't exposed to as many foreign cultures as people in London/Birmingham, its not fundamentally a BAD thing that they aren't, its stupid to expect every city to be a perfectly diverse, multi-cultural hub of understanding - but it is something else that people who aren't exposed to other cultures aren't taught or shown anything different by either their families or friends etc.

saying kids should learn about other cultures in schools takes responsibility from parents and family, yet most of the parental attitude will be passed down anyway

its that kind of ignorance which is detrimental
