It'll be same here in Finland from June. No problem during the summer but in winter when its -20C and snowing and shit it will be very very very shit.
But i'm not too sad though, it'll propably help me stop smoking cigarettes..

The solution is to allow a venue to be licensed for smoking if it's designed so that the bar is non-smoking and separate from the smoking area. So people could light up in the "dancefloor room" and the employees wouldn't get much passive smoke. However that's far too rational for the nanny-statists.
This is definitely the sensible solution. Why not even just allow smoking in their own toilets, or another small separated room with no music. This would mean smokers could still have a smoke whereas nonsmokers would not be affected by passive smoke as they would have no incentive to go into the smoking areas. A ban on smoking indoors is effectively a ban against all smoking- how is a club like Fabric, with a capacity of 1500, going to be able to maintain a flow of punters going in and out for a quick smoke. Even if people could go onto the pavement for a cigarette the police will soon crack down on it for disturbing the peace and all that draconian bullshit. I'm all for protecting non-smokers but as a smoker I feel I have the right to congregate with like minded people in a public building and that this liberty should not be infringed upon

It's sort of fun during the summer (there's a reason they scheduled it to take effect at this time of the year) but when it gets fucking freezing and wet out in the winter, it's very very shit. Furthermore, you won't be able to take a drink out with you, so you have to separate the two activities, which is even worse. House parties & squat parties are the way to go... I wish New York had more of that kind of scene... I loved those when I lived in the UK.

I don't know a single club where the bar is in a separate room to the dancefloor.

innit mate, im not a big drinker and prefer to smoke when im out at a dance..... it will be rubbish goin outside to smoke it, rather than chillin with a zoot taking in the beats ....
this ban reminds me of being at school man....having to go outside for a sneaky one, looooooooooooooooooooooooong ting
x x x
Same here, skankin out with a zoot can not be beaten.
The manager of the venue I hold Uprooted at always goes off at me about how there are too many people outside bunnin zoots as they create loads of noise but once this smokin ban comes in he's gonna have all of the cig smokers doin it as well. It's a ridiculous "solution"

Funny how ive never heard anyone complain of second hand smoke as a barman until now
In my opinion DMZ will need to be moved. If you cant smoke (and they are strict on it) then thats it. Cos drinkings already out the fucking question isnt it. I aint paying 7 quid a pint. Fuck off.
Also, I reckon were going to see a MASSIVE increase in harder drugs at these kind of events now. I myself have never done anything more then drink and smoke, and never really planned on doing so. But if its going to be a choice between paying INSANE amounts of money for alcohol, missing decent sized chunks of peoples sets while having to find somewhere to hide away outside mass to have a joint or buying a pill or two from someone standing at the back, I dont think I just speak for myself when I say the dynamic of these places is going to change CONSIDERABLY. And not for the better.

One of the best things about the venue we had wigflex at on friday (and maybe in the future) is there's an outdoor balcony next to the dancefloor, def a good look

there must be a loop hole somewhere. can people still smoke at venues if they're hired out for privite parties, like wedding receptions and stuff?

I'm pretty sure The Electric Eliminators put on a night in Glasgow after the ban, and somehow classed it as a private party so you could smoke inside. The venue was sketchy though, doubt it was so much a 'loophole' as just 'ignoring the law'. It was only a one off thing too, so I guess it's not a real solution.

Yeah, that wasn't classing it as a private party or whatever, it was just doing it in a skuzzy wee basement iirc

And they did two nights there I think (Mala? I didnae go so I wouldnae know) Best venue they've had so far as well

Thing is the going outside to smoke thing is ok as long as the venue has the ability to handle it. Can you imagine trying to get out of fwd, hanging around on curtain road for a smoke then trying to go back inside through one small doorway whilst simultaneously there are 50 people in the queue to get in...how are the bouncers going to deal with that?
People will muddle through but I worry its going to ruin the vibe of clubs for a while at least until some sort of informal compromise is reached. It won't be the police but the local councils who will be izan about it...and with all the hassle Hackney are giving Old Street bars and clubs at the moment they won't want to give them an excuse to be curtailed/closed down by allowing smoking on the sly.
