Just started listening to helicopter showdown... all I can say is wow. Such great sounds and uniqueness in all of their tracks!!!
I was wondering if you guys here on dsf could help me within the basic ideas of making and of the first 3 different bass sounds from the drop at 0:20.. Thanks in advance!!

Dude.. there is no rules when making tunes you could use any vocal and resample it like crazy ., on another note; glitching out vocals try dblue glitch.. if you can not get the vst, fine cuttings of audio files are key but be surgical when applying effects such as delays/echos etc.. and be certain on your arrangement when at final stages double check all vocals are were you want them :)

Pretty basic, but I'm wondering if anyone can id the kick in this track? Is it an 808? Or maybe a standard clean/hardhitting kick that is low passed? Come in at 0:30

Hey guys! There's an awesome sound I've been catching with a few songs for some time now, I've put a lot of thought into how the sound is made but can't seem to get my head around it quite well enough. The best way for me to describe this certain sound is to relate it to a bass wave running into a ladder. My best guess on this is that they are either using a performer on massive with square waves and, some added reverb on the low end. I could see myself using this sound in some very very creative ways, anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks :W:

Hey, everyone. I've recently been working on some chiller stuff and am having quite a bit of trouble getting the bass sound I want. I guess a pretty close comparison to what I'm going for would the the sound in this:




Not anything too complicated, just a nice full, rich sound. So far, all my attempts have come out almost inaudibly weak (most of the pure sine lines in the C1 - C2 range I've tried have been pretty much inaudible). In the mixer they're peaking certainly high enough and its not my speakers as if it was, I wouldn't be able to hear any other bass to compare to. So far I've been using FM8 for bass; arguably overkill for the sound in this case, but its become more or less of a go-to for me.

Knowing Flying Lotus, he probably sampled it from a bass guitar.

I wouldn't use FM8, it's a versatile and great synth but I don't know if that's the type of thing you're looking for. I think Chad is right, it sounds like a sampled P-bass to me. I don't know what DAW you're using but look into samplers. If you have Komplete, Kontakt should no doubt have something that will work. If not, your DAW probably has one, and you can find some great sample libraries for free online. Logic comes with some samples similar to this.

I use FL and I know my way around Edison very basically. You think I should try just finding a bass intro or something with a suitable tone, cut out one of the notes then essentially give it an ADSR type loop and resample with my bassline's pitches? I mean basically have it loop infinitely once it gets to the sustain and then just play different notes with the sampler in the piano roll?

Feed the operator back into itself to give it more harmonics.

Yeah, all you have to do is click on that little Magnet thing and click Snap To Zero-Crossings, and find a suitable loop once the initial hit ends and the sustain begins. Select the part you want to loop and right click and go to Region > Set Loop. there.

Which ever way you go about it, what you're trying to do is add harmonics to a basic bass sound then control the harmonics by subtractive methods.

One way you could do it (which is the way i would) Is apply pretty harsh distortion to a Sine wave then compress it heavily and apply a low pass filter and fuck about with the resonance and frequency. Get it to something that is way to harsh for your needs then bounce that and do the same (add distortion, compress and filter. Keep doing this and you'll thicken up the sound with layers of low frequency harmonics. bounce a couple of different versions and layer them panning SLIGHTLY to get the waveforms more detuned/out of phase. then bounce them to a single file, make mono, repeat. so on and so forth.

Do a final high ratio compression or limit to keep the dynamics flat and up the input gain on the limiter/comp to bring out the fullness of the sound, place output dB to suit the mix.

I'd experiment about with that sorta stuff till i came up with something i liked. What you want to be doing is creating the harmonics, shaping them and thickening up the sound as you see fit. That's the way you would do it.

Ok, thanks guys, I'll give these a try. Trying new stuff like this is good, cause even if I don't get the result I wanted, I still usually learn a thing or two in the process.

help creating pad sound

hey,

I am trying to recreate this pad sound.....its a pretty common sound I'm just pretty clueless to what waveforms I need to use to get the hollow sorta sound....got the modulations on the filter cutt off and envelopes ok just cant get the full sound.

any help would be much apprciated

Honestly that's probably a sample. But all it is is a bass guitar. So you have a nice deep bass that also has some higher end attack. If you can't hear it and it's peaking in your mixer, then the notes you're playing are probably a bit too low to be fully audible. Honestly you might want to try either boo bass or 3xosc (boo bass is fl studio's electric bass guitar module), and as far as 3xosc. I can assure you, it has plenty of power. The sub bass in the song in my sig, all 3x osc from fl. I know it doesn't have the same "sound" you're going after, but it's audible and has plenty of power.

So I guess you use massive?
Then the most important thing is that after you built your basic sound and you are about to apply the lfo you need to change the waveform to the one to the left of the sine wave (ramp?)

try tunning your own voice through a vocoder with the modulator being a really gritty saw.
