kendrick lamar is tumblrcore shit for white hipsters who dont listen to rap.

although this has a kernel of truth to it, i went to see him earlier this year here in phoenix and i think me and my friends were the only white people in the spot. and there was 11000 people. also it was only after the pitchfork hype that the white hipster jumped on top of it. before that with his mixtape stuff, he had a pretty large following from lots of respectable artists within the hiphop/rap community outside of white hipsters .

overall though kendrick lamar is hit or miss for me. but when he hits, it

is still infectious though

like swimming pools. when hiphop artists can convey sadness within a tune or their lives and struggle well, it makes a difference. he can do this.

Now that I've had a couple months to think about it, Section 80 edges out GKMC for me by a little bit, but they're both fucking fantastic albums. I think it's because I can turn Section 80 on and enjoy it context-free, whereas to get the full experience of GKMC you need to pay attention to the big picture. Also the production on Section 80 has a warmth rarely seen these days in hip hop. It just makes me feel good, even the sad songs.

I think Kendrick is honestly the best thing to happen to hip hop for a long time, yes im white, but thats not the point I have been listening to hip hop since i was a kid and he is the only person who recently has stood out (apart from like Davinci black hippie and a$ap rockys stuff last year. Oh yeh and lil b).

Kendrick is decent, but so are plenty of other artists. I don't get how he is "different" or "revolutionising the genre". Those kind of soundbytes are the exact phrases used by completely in-the-dark people who don't really like the genre that much in the first place in order to generate hype over something that their mate probably recommended them the day before.

Nobody's revolutionised hiphop since 1993, hipsters say that every new act is revolutionising their genre. It's how they sell copies of NME and get people to have arguments in the comments on Drowned In Sound.

Kendrick's one of the best rappers recording right now IMHO, that's all that really matters.

Is Dälek still releasing? I haven't heard any of his stuff since that album that had Ever Somber and Culture For Dollars on it. I caught him live three or four times at festivals and gigs in 2005 and 2006 - it was like finding out Bluto from Popeye could flow, but I don't think I've heard anything of him or his (completely fucking awesome) producer/DJ since. Ever Somber was tune of the year that year... amazing.

I like Death Grips, but they're about as one dimensional as it gets. Extreme, yeah... fun, YEAH... hipness factor, ULTRAHIP.... clever.... hmm, I haven't worked that out yet.

I dig A$AP Crew, but they're just party rappers from everything I've heard... good party rappers, but still... they're not on Kendrick's level with that more thoughtful/conscious angle. The thing I love about K.Dot is that he can hang on that generation-defining conscious tip (ADHD, Kush & Corinthians, Keisha's Song, Fuck Yo' Ethnicity, HiiiPower), but he can also "Diddy Bop and make them titties POP" on tunes like Michael Jordan.

I think NO LOVE DEEP WEBB was far too one-dimensional. I don't think Money Store was. For me it was an electronic PUNK album!
But yeah, I agree that ASAP are far too surface as far as content goes, probably Kendrick is a bit deeper, but then again I find his stuff less catchy.

As far as Dälek goes, yeah man, you've missed out on some great stuff! They havn't released anything since 2010 unfortunately, but I believe they had some limited live dates during 2012. If not as Dälek, at least The Oktopus (producer) did some gigs last year.

2007's, Abandoned Language remains my favourite album of theirs. Absence was deffo harder and more layered, but Abandoned Language is more subtle and cuts deeper. Less agression, more emotion that kinda thing.

2009's Gutter Tactics wasn't bad, but overall underwhelming compared to the previous albums. And in 2007 they also released a rarities compilation on the late HydraHead records, which was also good. They did release a fucking noisy/mammoth one track album in 2010, but I think that was a limited sort of thing.

Action Bronson is pretty good but I never hear much on dsf about him.

I haven't noticed too much mention of the Roc Marciano and Meek Mill albums which have both been doing good numbers... Meek was a bit meh, I thought, but Marciano's Reloaded was awesome... not revolutionary by any means - quite a timeless NYC sound really - but brilliantly done and definitely worth checking out.

Go make one! Im not qualified to make it as I only started listening rap/hiphop properly in 2012 but its actually overtaken everyother genre in my music folder now.
Yeah the meek milli one has maybe 2-3 songs that I like and that is probably more down to the beat than anything else.
