hardcore dancing was/is so silly

i don't understand gigs like that, why would you go to a gig to get all aggressive and jump into/bat people and shit

i get pogoing or whatever but why violence

That's a huge misconception right there, hardcore dancing isn't about hitting people or being violent actually (for the most part anyway, there's always the odd dickhead who has no pit etiquette) people tend to dance in their own little space, the only time people get hurt is if they get in the way of someone who's dancing

In fact most metalheads i've spoken to seem to think hardcore dancing is weak specifically because we arent trying to batter eachother haha

i used to go to body n soul in NYC on sundays... you would always see really strange old ppl there doing interpretive dancing.. i miss that kind of vibe where nobody really gives a fuck what you do..

i haven't regularly attended hardcore or punk shows since 06, but from my experience there were plenty of instances of intentional violence or running into a group of people on purpose. maybe not to specifically hurt one person, but if someone got hurt - well, that's just what happened. at least that's how it was in my region. normally when i saw people "dancing" in their little spot making sure not to touch anyone, it was at bad metalcore shows where the guys dressed like girls.

Yeah that really wound me up too, whilst nobody is going out of their way to hit you you can't expect to come out of it totally unscathed either

Tbh, it's often the people that don't want to be in a moshpit causing trouble in moshpits. Most people know the rules and it can be one of the most fun and friendliest places to watch a gig... not the most relaxing by any measure... but fun as FUCK and because you're constantly interacting with each other you normally end up making friends with someone. It's the people that look from afar and assume everyone's fighting that cause the problems.

I remember getting evils from a woman on the edge of the pit for pretty much a whole Lagwagon gig a few years ago... she even complained when I got her to make some room so that a girl who was looking pretty ropey in the pit could be ushered to safety. Just stand a few people back where it's all calm... you can still see and hear!

Well not neccesarily 'making sure not to touch anyone' but finding a space where you're less likely to smash into anyone, obviously if people get too close they are gunna get hurt, i'll try and find a decent enough space to go off in but once i've started it's up to you to make sure you stay at a safe distance as i'm not really paying much attention to my surroundings by that point

Not everyone understands House music

Yes they do, that's it's biggest overriding positive feature... that's why it's the most ubiquitous form of electronic music. Nearly every country has a house scene of some form or another... every human being with ears and an auditory cortex can understand a four-to-the-floor kick pattern.

It's just that an awful lot of people go into genres of music with preconceptions that they can't shake off... I grew up as a hiphopper/junglist and during my teenage years of I heard a 4x4 kick drum pattern I'd run a mile... surely there can't be any imagination if they all use the same basic rhythm? Obviously, over the years I've been exposed to so much House that it's been impossible not to like bits and I'm amazed with how much rhythmic scope producers can find within that 4x4 pattern (and with how little scope some producers find in more 'free' genres)... but my instinctive reaction is often still, "Eh, fuck that... BORING DRUMS".

It's my problem, not House music.

Let's not beat about the bush, A LOT of house IS just boring 4x4, but the tracks that stand out work so well and are real treasures because they stand out in one of the most diluted and popular genres with a pretty rigid structure.
