I tend to start off clean. The only thing I've changed in the default template is that I've turned the keyboard playing notes off and mapped the Play and Stop buttons to my keyboard.

i have the drum racks-impulse combo rack setup then quite a few audio+midi tracks which all have ssl channel strip plug on them. short/med/long/spring reverb, decapitator and tube vst on return channels. also have roundtone tape emu plug on the master channel on a pretty gentle setting and have the stop button mapped to my ` key.

So im curious as to how I can get ableton to sync to whatever bpm that first sample is that I drop in... Ive seen it done before, but cant figure out what settings it is...what i mean is, to open ableton, have nothing loaded, nothing at all, and then pick a sample/stem I like and what ever Bpm that sample is, my ableton tempo will auto to that samples BPM...

ableton guru's of the dubstep persuasion, I leave this question to you....

My Live sessions always create a huge spike in CPU usage.
For example, I had 3, yes THREE, tracks in my project and it causes the CPU to range from 65-85%.
When I used Live 7, I didn't have this issue...

I am on a MacBook with 2.4ghz dual core processor with 2gbs of RAM.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I increased my sample rate from 512 to 1024 and that helped a little...
I usually only have ableton and Google Chrome open when I am in production mode.
Thanks for the help!

What version of Live are you using? Things got a lot more stable with the 8.2.2 release. CPU tended to be higher on my macbook (same specs) than a smilarly spec'd windows laptop before i sold it. No idea why.

I am on 8.2.1.
I will update but I can't imagine that 8.2.2 will be much different.

Is it possible to record group automations in session mode? When you have effects on grouped channels, the automations for those effects only show up in arrangement mode. Is there not a way for a group to "carry" in a sense the automations for the effects on it in session mode?

@ShadowMachine I don't think that there is a setting that does that. You just drop a file with BPM info in it and Live changes its BPM automatically.

@blakedipp Have you installed any new plugins that may have caused this spike? What about other software?

@king_rat Session clips cannot record automation, this is a much requested feature and people hope it will be possible in Live 9.

Can installing plugins without using them cause a spike?
The only plug-ins I use consistently are PSP EasyVerb, FabFilter Pro-Q, Massive, Albino 3, and a handful of the native Live instruments/Effects...
hmmm.

slave the DAW's tempo to the sample, should be an option in the clip info on the left. near where the tranpose and volume controls are.

See if removing some of them from the project will tame the spikes.

Mass croppage in Ableton

Post by blazinaidan » Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:34 pm

I was gonna ask on the Ableton forums but it's under my brother's email and I don't know the password. Anyway, I was curious if there was a quick way to crop like, every 4 bars or every bar or something of a song. Cuz right now I'm pretty much copying the original file, meticulously setting that sample begin and end markers for the section I want to crop, cropping, pasting the original file again and repeating. This gets boring. Is there a more efficient method?

Ableton splitting question

Post by leeany » Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:59 pm

I'm aware that this is a pretty silly question, but still :

I like dragging long audio files into my Ableton Live, and then splitting them into pieces to rearrange them.
Normally I just right mouse click the sample and select 'split' at the point where I want it to be splitted, but sometimes I don't see the split option. I'd like to know why this is and what I can do about it.

Help would be highly appreciated

Try clicking and creating a warp marker at the point where the split is not an option and see if it becomes an option after the warp marker is created. Just my first guess.

Because there are basically two "zones" or areas. if you right click at the uppermost portion of the clip you will have a different menu than if you right click towards the bottom.

just use a hot key..ctrl-l or whatever it is

Just put the song on a track and press CTRL+E every 4 bars?

What do you mean by crop? You mean splitting a track up into a bunch of sections 4 bars long? If so use the split tool. Set up your grid for 4 bars, and right click on the clip in arrange view wherever you want to split it. Repeat. You can also select a section to split. Is that what you meant?

edit - apparently control E is the shortcut for splitting, so: what he said :)
