I see what you mean with people holding them up as the pinnacle of 'real hip-hop' but they're undeniably talented rappers & producers with a good knack for hooks.

Yeah, this.

The funniest part is that half of the backpacker acts love listening to a bit of ignorant hip hop... it's mainly just the fans who blinker themselves to a single lane.
