It really is far to hot today, my heritage is far too northern european to be dealing with this heat
1/4 scottish + 1/4 austrian + 1/2 english = built for winter

Re: The things that pissed you off today ™ thread
So I needed some volunteering experience, as I'm probably the laziest person in my whole class, and am worried about getting matched when I apply for internship.
There was this opportunity to do the live sound for this "UC Idol" thing, basically an American Idol type thing at my uni. I figured 'I've worked on a lot of tunes, pissing around with Logic, this should be easy, just match the vocal levels to the instrumentals".
Last night we had the practice thing, I got the tunes off of the contestants, and played them. They sounded like complete shit over a decent system, and one contestant asked 'why do the cymbals sound like tingling bells, it doesn't do that on my iPhone.' I check the MP3, it is a 320, but apparently he recorded it off of YouTube. It turns out all the contestants did, so the highs sound like fucking jingle bells and make everyone's ears bleed. 'can't you fix that?' "not really"
Then, it came to trying to match the sound of the contestants to the backing tracks. Easy I thought. However, apparently these people have never sang on mics before. So they pretty much whisper the verses, then shout the choruses into the mics. On girl goes so far as to put the mic closer to her mouth during the chorus to make it "more emotional". Of course, I don't have a compressor, so the promotors keep saying "turn her up" during the verse then, " whoa not that much turn her down" during the chorus. I try explaining all this in vain.
Then, they wanted me to add reverb to the vocals. So I add a bit, not enough that you notice it being there, but enough that it sounds kind of natural. Bt nope, they want me to drown it in reverb. I try to explain my position but again, they don't listen. So I make it a bit wetter and they are all happy, until they realize that it sounds too busy and muddy, can't I make the voice clearer. Turn down the reverb and they say, yeah that's clearer but wheres the reverb, it makes it sound professional.
Since it was a train wreck practice, we're going at it again tonight. All I want is to pad my CV, I don't actually give a shit about it. It certainly doesn't help that I'm pretty easy going too, I guess maybe I need to grow a bigger backbone and just do what sounds good rather than what They keep asking for.

That is the most stupid thing I've read in a while. He has no idea about what elitism actually is (either that, or he's giving stupid examples for the public). Medicine is not an elitist field, pretty much anyone can go to med school... The same goes for the military (as long as you don't have any disabilities, which is common sense considering those people put their and others' lives at risk).yoowan wrote:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... ithin.html

What a moron. At the time, Marcuse may have seemed like one of those fashionable Left-wing academics whose silly ideas you grow out of once you've got a job.
I have people who share the same views in my class and I gotta sit through and listen to that shit at seminars.
