Please. Demons, Bass, Palace, Leaf, Keep it G, Purple Swag....all amazing tunes. I'm glad more people are picking up on it as there's FAR FAR worse shit that could've gotten popular.
Agree with both of you. I look at it like this, since around the time fifty signed with Eminem for his first record when most of his tracks where interesting (imo), it hasn't seemed possible (or viable) for major labels to fund records that wasn't looking to succeed from that tasteless crossover appeal they all go for.
(I don't agree with it, but it appears to be so.)
Obviously people like Jayz had been doing it like that for a while but he had very little groundwork to begin with and was almost like a major artist from the get go. Especially considering how much easier it was to market gangster rap at that time and the void Pac and Biggie left.
Rap was like the fourth largest export in the US at that time , which is completely insane.
You can do a great independent record or a mixtape and get recognized now, but as soon as you have someone else going around and buying beats, it becomes this mess like Asaps, Kendricks and Pusher Ts last record were imo.
The fact that there weren't more than the couple of clam beats on that record was silly and a stupid gamble.

i don't think much (if any) of the production was handled by anyone on brainfeeder. from what i read in an interview, they got most of the beats from random emails.
they did say they have been taking in beats from the likes of lalapux, clam casino, i think ras g, and probably flylo himself for their actual debut album.

I just bought Kendrick's album, i love it... definately not full of club beats, but let's not forget music is subjective... not everything appeals to everybody, if it doesnt speak to you your not going to like it. I love it though

Yeah, I know what you mean, but I see no reason to invite mainstream in and Kendrick either shouldn't have or he should've trusted his own ears that seem to work fine on their own
I don't think its a bad record per se, but underwhelming to say the least. I think he's an incredibly gifted rapper technically but definitely not living up to his potential. Stylewise some of the cuts are straight up bad.
I think I can now make a fair guess as to what kind of hip hop fan you are.
I don't think of people involved in this stuff as fans, but Im definitely not a fan of leather overalls, eye patches and tommy tattoos.

Ray I really want to hear your logic on this one. I mean I get if he's just not your thing but you can't deny he has talent and a lot of appeal. As far as mainstream rap goes, Kendrick is about as good as it gets.

Surprised at the Kendrick backlash. I can't stand his "Martin had a dream, Kendrick has a dream" bullshit and thought Section 80 was very mediocre..but GKMC was great imo. It's sole blemish is Backseat Freestyle, which has bizarrely gotten a lot of praise. Don't understand that at all. Anyways..
Hardest junts I've heard in a minute:
Rocky makes pretty good music, but it's really hard for me to like him. Just seems like a soft smart-ass poser to me. Fwiw, he could have "gone pop" waaayy more than he did on the album. It still paled greatly in comparison to the mixtape, but hats off to him for not completely jumping the shark.
Rubenslikk, Mr. Mfn eXquire, Lil Ugly Mane, & Schoolboy Q best in the game atm.
