Reason is pretty quick, it is just still a closed environment.

Yeah I can kind of confirm this I guess. It's very good for non-linear composition. I like that I can make variations on clips and not have to worry about where they'll go in the arrangement. It's like building an arsenal of clips in session view and then once you've got enough to play with, you can switch to arrangement view and start laying them out. The midi recording and overdubbing is very quick. It'll trim your midi clips to fit the bar automatically and record any knobs you twist, etc.rorz9992 wrote:I heard Ableton is the most intuitive DAW and you can get your ideas down fast as fuck, can anyone confirm!?
Reaper is the fastest for mixing bar none though. You can create complex routing schemes instantly just by dragging the I/O button from one track to another. Or you can click the I/O button and get deep. I like how simple tasks remain simple without robbing you of the details if you need to do something tweaky.

Session view is amazing! Agreed. Arrangement is a little 1970's Russian clunky, IMO.
Re simple/simple that is where an app like cubase falls down.

German you mean. And yeah. I wish I could merge Reaper and Ableton into one uberdaw.

Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
I recently compiled Ardour because I don't want to screw with setting up WineASIO for FL Studio right now. I'm not expecting a whole lot, but we'll see. Nonetheless, many are saying it's the best audio production client available on linux. The devs are kinda pricky, though, at the same time as being incredibly generous. They released Ardour3 as open source, but they charge users for precompiled binaries. They're giving away a product and its source code for free, but making you pay if you're not confident enough to compile shit. On the other hand, it's free (and allegedly very good) software if you can go through the simple task of compiling it.
Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
It's only 1 buck for the precompiled version though, that's hardly spectacular. They'd probably do the same with the source code if they didn't release it under an open source copyleft license.
That said i'm pretty sure that when bitwig comes out it'll outclass Ardour as far as linux daws go.

Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Didn't know bitwig was going to run on linux... actually prolly did but I'm stupid. I don't like where ms or apple are going, and going fast. I really may have to learn bitwig

Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Bitwig looks dope regardless. I'm suspicious it's gonna be vaporware though at the rate they're taking. I think they started hyping too early so now a lot of the buzz has died down. They should have waited till closer to release I think. It says coming soon on their website, pretty sure they've been beta testing for ages. Maybe it will be the Reaper/Ableton hybrid I've been wanting.
Also, eugh why the name? I'm guessing it's a reference to bitmask? There's a photo on their site of the dev's holding their logo above their heads so I guess it's supposed to represent a wig made of bits. Seems a bit silly and unrelated to audio.

Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Looks like more of just an ableton clone to me.
Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Yeah it really comes down to whether they'll do Ableton better than Ableton. It's a lot of the original developers I guess, so there's a similar mindset. Remains to be seen whether they'll improve upon Live.

Yeah, last vids I saw was actually like ableton mixed with some flstudio
but I was underwhelmed, looked very very similar to ableton.
Honestly it is like ableton in that it really feels like it was developed to make minimal techno
like you can do other stuff with it, but if a techno producer was going to make an environment for what they do... it would be ableton/bitwig.

Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Heh yea. Their polyphonic per-note automation could be useful though. Only supported by the built-in instruments obviously but 3rd party devs might implement it once there's a DAW that offers the capability.
I think they'll really have to outdo Live in terms of built-in instruments and effects. If they launch with a better sampler and a power synth that rivals 3rd party options, I can see them doing very well. Hardware integration is also very important. I doubt they have the bankroll from the outset to have something parallel to the Push, but if they had a script that worked with it and other controllers, they could sell enough units to eventually have a dedicated hardware controller of their own.

Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Like you said though, the hype has faded. They missed the wave that hey generated. But it does seem good that they are taking the time to fix shit. Probably were flooded with bug reports. You know building from the ground up, there are so many loose ends.
Re: My DAW is better than yours! (Friendly DAW Wars debate)
Yeah no doubt. It'd be way worse to release it with a bunch of holes. They don't want the image of a cheap knockoff, that's hard to shake.
Maybe I'll apply for a job there
