Re: Nando's Skank
I hate prog metal. There your argument fails straight away.
Re: Nando's Skank
This ting
The traitor we hated penned the paper
Concocted a potion to make him greater
He knocked up a treat in a laboratory
At the time of conception he shouted glory
Reel off a list of the usual suspects
Subjectively speaking we all got defects
We all cavemen in a suit and tie
Man why you opposing conform or die
I know I’ve put it simply and quite condensed
The wheel was a brainstorm of commonest sense
But now we need a branch just for terror defence
So somewhere it went wrong, hence…
Point is because this is real talk, I literally only had to change about 3 words, and it'dve applied to this situation (I changed it a bit more). With real talk it is easy to pick up shit that seems to apply directly to you, or some other situation you've witnessed - that's the definition of real talk. Jehst's rap lacks any real talk, it's all just linguistic tricks. That's why it is like prog metal in a rap form.

Jehst's rap lacks any generic shit, it's all a man showing off his creative skills in his native language rather than raping an artform in the interests of his bank account.

shut the fuck up man (xarcane)
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.
Re: Nando's Skank
Agreed, Ed Sheeran is is pretty skilled, there's a video of him with devlin and it's cool to see someone who doesn't wear air max's or tracky's doing stuff like that.onelove. wrote:love how the tone of the entire thread is decided by the first reply

He's skilled in a way, but he makes god awful music.
Just because you can play an instrument/sing/rap what ever doesn't mean you're going to make good music.
Besides the thread was about that video which was painful to watch

Re: Nando's Skank
These are the lines literally just before the lines I editted.
You gotta feel sickness as I depict this
You never can escape that you’ve been a witness
Hunting the deer we became distracted
Disturbed by the way that our neighbours acted
Jumped to conclusions with sick delusions
Cos bulk intrusions had us confused
Began with the fusion of elements new
And strongly denied we’d developed a brew
To burn off flesh of an irrelevant few
A malevolent crew not benevolent (you know)
How on earth is that generic? That's exactly the same shit prog metal fans would say about brilliant acoustic folk. It ain't generic, but I could edit it to fit the situation in about 2 seconds because it's real talk.

xarcane wrote:How is it not applicable? Of course it's applicable because that's what it sounds like to me. Poetry as an art form evolved as a way of storytelling. Rap in it's pure form is a way of storytelling, a way to say things you couldn't otherwise communicate through song, otherwise singing is superior. Jehst doesn't say anything that requires rap as a vehicle, his lyrics are literally only held together by their complexity. In that way it is the rap equivalent of prog metal, and its fans have that same type of "elitism" as people that only listen to prog metal.
If you get a true poem, you can condense it almost infinitely, and it'll still be poetic. That's how people like Carol Ann Duffy roll, that's true elitist, hidden from the public. The average joe will see a short and snappy poem by Duffy that doesn't look much, but to a poet there is so much information and allusion on every line, that you can expand it in your head into a full poem, so basically you make your own poem every time you read a Duffy - that's why she's poet Laureate. After doing that you realise you can do it with any poem of reasonable length. With Jehst you can't condense it that way... you try and translate it, like you can with any good poem, it'll read like some patchy prose. His amount of lyrical skill is astounding in that same way that a brilliant solo is, but to me it is just that -it ain't real.
we've all done gcse english mate
Re: Nando's Skank
Perhaps if you decide that Beowulf is the only English poem that was ever a real poem. Poems are a way of expressing human emotion through language. They can be about anything. They could tell stories, they could just be a magical combination of words that don't even rhyme, yet evoke complex emotion in the reader. Example does a wonderful job of making words rhyme in order to tell a story that's been told a million times before. Jehst is a master of language who can make the listener think things they've never thought before without even directly saying them. One of them is a hack. One of them is an artist.xarcane wrote:Poetry as an art form evolved as a way of storytelling.
Poetry is a far higher art than pinning it down to "storytelling".... ffs...

Re: Nando's Skank
White and middle-class, my big black foot... I grew up on a council estate where violence was the norm.
Poetry didn't evolve as a way of communicating human emotion through language, that's bullshit, that's called conversation - it evolved as a form of storytelling. It evolved as an art-form to make it easier to remember stories and preserve our history before the art of writing. It does engender emotion obviously, but it engenders emotion by letting other people experience the situation you're writing/talking about and having them develop their own emotional responses. That's why Duffy is at the top of the art form even though her work is incredibly elitist - she has extended that concept through to the point where she uses a form that lets you construct your own poetry, and you become even more involved in the situation she's describing.
You can't just feed emotion into someone, being all like - "I am sad", "I am angry", which is basically what Jehst does if you take away the linguistic techniques:
"Eye of the storm, my tears fall as a torrential downpour
The flood, your death wish written in blood"
Strip it to it's bare bones that's simply - "I'm sad". That doesn't engender an emotional response like true art, it just makes me want to mock and belittle him.
