i know you like to draw in your lfo's automatically. would you mind taking a screen shot of the automation for this particular part?

I honestly don't see why people struggle to replicate the KOAN Sound bass. It's really easy, once you know the ins and outs of Reese bass' that is. Here's a patch to demonstrate how you can make that distorted, crunchy sound in Massive.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lpufde
After that, apply saturation and guitar rig, or amp, or camel phat distortion and compression. Then slice into new MIDI, and have fun :4:

mostly whats happening is im layering foley and little fx in the reeses to make them have i guess more movement and to make them sound bigger cause your adding another layer. Mostly I've been making pure reeses in massive, FM8, and reaktor and mostly took them and distort and everything like you would expect, then i would split freq's just to make my bass mono and clean it up a bit and stereo widen the high end. Now when your adding foley with this fat reese its gonna mix together but also make sure you eq your samples nicely and make most of your samples go through the same basic processing so they all gel together. Some of my reeses already had foley integrated into them before i even threw them into the project and then adding more is just making them more intricate.

each little thing in there is helping making the bassline and some of my reeses as i mentioned has some foley already in them

Manny, couple of questions for you you crazy, crazy person.

What distortion unit are you using and how many times would you apply it to get to that point?

It sounds very compressed without being too squashed.. Is that because by taking notches out you need to compress after a while to bring the levels up or is it a purposeful effect? Is it a few different units with moderate compression or only 1 or two with more drastic settings?

Also, unless you don't want to give too much away, could you post an example effects chain that you would use for something like that

e.g. Distortion 10% wet> Chorus 15% wet> Phaser 40% wet> distortion> 10% wet> Notch filter (2 sweeps, narrow Q) etc.......

Camalphat is the number 1 used distortion i use. That and Logic's overdrive. The only big effects i use thats outside of logic are Camalphat and Metaflanger and very little ones that i barely use anymore, the rest is logics plugins which imo are super strong. My distortions would have full mix like camalphat would be mixed at 100% but the mech would be at 15 and tube at 20 and have the notch filter play on an lfo and i would have the env being lfo'ed as well. I do lots of processing with modulation like chorus and stuff but i make them mono instead of stereo but give them like 20 percent mix. A lot of my notchs are also from my eq. i make about 2 of them and mix between them in little subtle intervals.

The sound sounds squashed cause of camalphats compressor and before i bounce my reeses into kontakt i compress my basslines very little bit so they gel together, because i will layer in my bass sessions.

I can vary in distortions from maybe 2 to maybe 6 and overkill it, depends on the sound im trying to achieve and how im going to get there so i place my effects carefully.

Here's a sound I was trying to achieve for a while.
It`s basically from my Psytrance roots.
Just psychedelic goodness.
Same sound run through a few filters and patterned.

this sounds really cool. would u mind explaining how you did the keytracking ?
I used Native Instruments Massive for this sound, so assigning Keytracking is as easy as dragging/dropping the compass icon located next to the macro control to the parameter of your choice. The macro control can be found in the bottom-right corner of the main page. Once it's there, you can have it raise or lower a parameter depending on what midi note is being struck.

This feature isn't just limited to Massive though, as it's been used in other synthesizers for quite sometime, although the method of assigning it to a parameter may be different. I suggest reading the manual to find out if it's featured on the synth you use.

You guys are posting some fire hot sounds up here and keeping this thread legit! I just struck a little resampling gold so I'll have more to share when I get back home tomorrow to render out some of the sounds I've been working on. With all the talent in here I think we may be able to make this thread a stick-worthy post! :h:
