I also live in the US, and the whole pirating aspect is debated endlessly. I download music that cant be found anywhere else (DJ Screw remixes, dubstep, underground hip hop and rap, DnB, and Turntablism, etc.)
All of these genres arent widely available or recognized by the masses. Dubstep is unheard of in Virginia, so for me to get the music without resorting to piracy, I would pay the shipping for vinyl from oversees, borrow a set of turntables from my dad and rip to my MP3 Player. Or I could simply download a mix which has all the newest songs blended into a seamless experience. I wouldnt pirate Dubstep, but I would pirate the mainstream shit major labels are putting out (Paying 15 dollars for one or two good tracks)
IMHO, Dubstep sounds better in a mix rather than a single track.
Also, the buying and collection of vinyl is fine but the space it takes up and the investment needed is pretty high. My dad has an entire wall from corner to corner fill with records (12", 45s, Rare albums, mainstream crap, everything), when he has a portion of his collection( the stuff he plays at parties) on to 100 gigabyte hard drives
