music is wallpaper to most people (you all know this). they don't care about it. they just care that it's there. walk into a restaurant....there's music. walk into clothing store....music. what kind? ....doesn't really matter, just music. probably some stupid house remix of a diva r&b tracks entitled, "wooh I need your loving (wooh I need ur touch)"

by posting on this forum, you've already put yourself out of that group. at least the music has sparked an interest beyond just wallpaper for you.

Some people's interest in music goes beyond just listening to what's out there. Some feel the need to make it readily available to them....they do so by getting it into their personal collection somehow (if that's illegal or free downloads, purchasing, etc.....it's all the same. For them....they have it when they want to listen to it.)

Others feel the need to experience music in a particular form. For some that's the intimacy of an mp3 on an iPod, a tower full of cd's, or vinyl.

Some people feel the need to share music with others....via dj-ing it out, doing a radio show, an mp3 blog, or creating their own tunes.

I have to get the battery charger for my computer (i'm running on "reserver power") .....so I'm done with my ramblings. Sorry for not coming to any conclusions.....but I'm pretty sure there are none.

I also live in the US, and the whole pirating aspect is debated endlessly. I download music that cant be found anywhere else (DJ Screw remixes, dubstep, underground hip hop and rap, DnB, and Turntablism, etc.)

All of these genres arent widely available or recognized by the masses. Dubstep is unheard of in Virginia, so for me to get the music without resorting to piracy, I would pay the shipping for vinyl from oversees, borrow a set of turntables from my dad and rip to my MP3 Player. Or I could simply download a mix which has all the newest songs blended into a seamless experience. I wouldnt pirate Dubstep, but I would pirate the mainstream shit major labels are putting out (Paying 15 dollars for one or two good tracks)

IMHO, Dubstep sounds better in a mix rather than a single track.

Also, the buying and collection of vinyl is fine but the space it takes up and the investment needed is pretty high. My dad has an entire wall from corner to corner fill with records (12", 45s, Rare albums, mainstream crap, everything), when he has a portion of his collection( the stuff he plays at parties) on to 100 gigabyte hard drives 8)

There is some evidence to suggest that downloading has some beneficial effects on mainstream music sales. (There have been a number of academic studies which indicate this -- I'm thinking of the Harvard Business School one in particular.)

However, it is also a fact that downloading damages the sales of a number of non-mainstream genres. For example, there are a number of reasons why Grime artists don't enjoy greater commercial success, but one important one is that too many grime fans download tracks when they could afford to buy them, or one of the (now numerous) compilations featuring grime tracks. This is less of an issue with dubstep, but it's still something of a problem as Plastician has indicated.

It's also a fact that few if any of the main dubstep artists make money from record sales. Just consider the sales volumes and work out the net profit -- it's just not enough to live on. They scrape by from doing shows. A lot work part time. If as many dubstep fans bought their records as could afford to, then there would be a lot more dubstep records in the world.

It's difficult to criticise downloaders who simply can't afford to buy the music -- if they're that short of cash then they wouldn't be able to buy it anyway, so it's not a lost sale. But there's a lot of people who could afford it and are either too tight or too lazy to shell out for vinyl or, even a 99p -- 99 fucking p - download from bleep.

I have a problem with those people.

That's a pretty good stance to be on, actually. I'll modify mine to this... but still think that even if you can't afford it, you shouldn't steal... this isn't eating--this is a commodity.

Most producers are making the real money with touring and DJ gigs, not from producing.

I followed that Harvard study at length. Their research was based off of a year of studying SLSK and Soundscan records here in America.

It specifically tracked very popular mass marketed artists with MTV and Radio airplay compared with databased barcoded sales records. Their findings have been thrown back at the RIAA by Filesharing blogs and websites as proof that there is positive impact.

You can't apply that harvard study to our scene in any way because Dance Music Vinyl 12" sales aren't tabulated by Soundscan or any formal Electronic Database. As far as I know, there isn't any study that has proven anything for or against the impact of filesharing in underground UK music. It's simply groundless. What you can say without hesitation, is that NO one with the exception of maybe Tempa has made significant profits in this scene.

I don't believe in stealing music from independent, broke artists, but the majors can take it in the ass for all I care. Metallica used to come in to the restaurant where I worked right about the time Lars Ulrich was throwing his big hissy fit, and believe me they got more money than GOD, so if someone steals there music or from others rich cocksuckers like them .Who fucking cares!!!!!

What do you guys think of calling it "borrowing"? My main reason for downloading is either to listen to stuff before it's officially released or just because I can't stand waiting for the mailman.. maybe I could go as low as an impatient gentleman thief. ;)
When it comes to dubstep, and other vinyl dominated music, I urge all producers and labels to put it out on Bleep or whereever as fast as they can! I'm sure I'm not the only one without turntables... Digital distribution is like made for people like us!
