pretty much. it has distinction.. the triple kick is used a lot in the percussion..Phigure wrote:breakstep was a thing just like chillstep is a thing nowadays (except not fucking wank)Genevieve wrote:Was breakstep ever really a 'thing'? The early stuff was basically 2-step where the drums were breakbeats. Sounding a lot like slowed down like dnb with a bubbly bassline. Then the whole dubstep and grime thing started to happen and then it sounded more like a breakbased take on dubstep.
138 Trek sounds like it had more in common with Zed Bias and The Knowledge sounds like it has more affinity with let's say, Kito or something.
Seemed more like an umbrella term for an approach to garage derived music with a breakbeat. If a halfstep breakstep banger came out these days, I'm sure most people would call it dubstep.
not it's own genre, but a particular flavor of dubstep.

It's been around since before dubstep doe and probably influenced dubstep before dubstep influenced it.

it definitely influenced it, but it depends on where you draw the line on when dubstep "began"Genevieve wrote:It's been around since before dubstep doe and probably influenced dubstep before dubstep influenced it.
if you choose to say around 2002ish when it was still 2steppy but noticeably darker and bassier than 2step at the time then for the most part they evolved side by side
if you say 2004ish then yeah it existed before
Re: Dubstep Allstars Vol 10 will be mixed by...
see this is where it gets kinda opinion based.. or did it ever come about to figure what was the first "dubstep" song written? thoughts? maybe i missed the thread on this subject.. anyway first tunes i heard were from mark one back in 2004 off of the grime lp.. and some of that music does not even sound like what is considered "dubstep", but imo more techno/uk garage influenced.. but its still around 140 bpm. so i dunno.Genevieve wrote:It's been around since before dubstep doe and probably influenced dubstep before dubstep influenced it.

Naw, 1999. 138 Trek must've come out in like 1999? 2000? When did 'I don't Smoke' by Deekline come out? Must've been around that time too. That was a big one.
And I think Skream considered Zinc a big influence of his.
I think dubstep started in 2001 with this though.
Took a fucking breakcore producer to show everyone how to do it. (know it's subjective, though. Mad blurry)

well yeah there were a few exceptions like the aforementioned tunes, but the majority of what you'd call breakstep was a bit later than 1999Genevieve wrote:Naw, 1999. 138 Trek must've come out in like 1999? 2000? You can definitely hear a lot of 138 Trek and Artwork - Red in his and Benga's early dark garage stuff.Genevieve wrote:I think Skream considered Zinc a big influence of his.

There's also an old Scuba one from when he still went by Paul Rose that is fiyah. Starts with a Leftfield track and ends with Boxcutter - Brood. Think you can get it and Spectrum Analysis in the 'just put on dubstep allstars 2' thread. And an old Distance Rinse fm show from 05 floating around as well. First time Vex'd - Killing Floor got played on radio I believe.johney wrote:Distinction - Spectrum Analysis mix (is it that one you mean nev?)

^ Woops I got it wrong too, that was the mix I was talking about when I said starts with Leftfield and ends with Boxcutter, by Stealth not Scuba.
