re: hip-hop:

so much underground fire rite now..
a few bits to chek:

Shadowhuntaz on Skam
Dalek on Mike Patton's label Ipeac
also Tolcha's new collab with RQM - 'World Is A Ghetto' which ima drop on Monday nite
UTZ & Dunlock Blackson
Ghostface and MF Doom
also Roots Manuva's recent album 'Alternately Deep'

m/a.. x
Ill be sure to check them, The Roots Manuva record is great as all his stuff always is.
Ghosts new lp is cool too (the only member of the WU who has produced constantly strong material)

I know that the UK is producing some gems right now, when i said that rap had sold its soul I was refering to the barrage of watered down hip-pop with all the artist STILL telling us how much they are cooking in the kitchen and how many rocks they are sportin.. stale!

Im really feeling the dubstep right now and I will still make DnB.. but it seems to be the genre between my love of Warp electronica and DnB..

Only just recently started to check your show and I cant believe Ive not been checking it before seeing as I love stumbling across new good music! the Boxcutter and the Burial sessions blew me away!
Thanks :)

Jungle and Dubstep both have good tunes and shit tunes. Jungle has been around longer, thus the ratio of shit tunes to good tunes has changed and over time, good tunes are harder to find. the same happens to all genres.

My sentiment exactly. I suggest everyone tries to enjoy the freedom of this relatively fresh style whilst it still lasts! The producers should keep an open mind and the listeners an open ear, and be wary of any stagnation.

listen, without imposing boundaries or prejudice of any kind and you'll discover so much music to love..
my favourite d&b record of this moment is Amit's new album 'Never Ending' up-coming on Klute's label Commercial Suicide in May.. it's outstanding..
droppin' a beat from it on the show Monday...
as well as spankin' new Benga, Oris Jay and Hijak dubz

m/a.. x
I love all good music Im not trying to be negative about the genre, but back when Source direct, photek, hidden agenda, krust etc.. were experimenting with minimal DnB it worked so well..
:( ..
I know its just evolution of a genre.. but sometimes evolution doesn't do any favours for the music, look at American rap/hip-hop... sold its soul for money.. now that's the 'true' power of the dollar!
Like I posted before, you might want to check out the Unsung heroes cd. Most innovating dnb out there (imo :P ) :)

Ed Rush, Trace, Nico were excellent - a more technical dnb style

Torque and Technology are great tracks.

Vex'd remind me of them alot - a very industrial/trechnical sound built on the roots of the genre.

It still excites me, the sheer raw energy of it - also Ed Rush and Optical, Wormhole is the business as well.

Wouldn't have a clue how to dance to it however, not for more than 5 minutes anyway

Love that era as well... and Wormhole LP was and still is a classic (evident in that it ushered in an era of numerous piss poor wormhole clones).

Got a lil mini mix I've had up for a while that starts with the classic 'Mad Different Methods' (Ed Rush, Trace, Nico). 96-99 here

Force is Electric! GunCheck...Locust original too...

ignoring the rest of the thread sorry...junglist rhetoric breeds a new zealot every hour...i'm not going to knock on anyones tastes, those days are over for me...

my favorite jungle tunes
intense - quickening
untold ep - back to nam
labello blanco - taste of the new breed
tpower on soapbar
the last four minutes of bukems music (when the chimes cut out its on!)
pretty much everything on rugged vinyl including this little one off before the label started.
abducted- tpower rmx
mad tpower tunes...couldnt even give away that 1st album last year though...
babylon man...nothing tops it. everyone knows it.

I know it sounds mad, but some of the JumpUp stuff (TOV/Ganja/V) hasnt really held up for me over time. Not saying I would bob my head in a club but its just not that good to me anymore.

dj rap - hardstep...hhhaaarrrdddssstteeepp

need to stop rambling

dude breakcore is almost as old as jungle is :)
depends wot u mean by breakcore

Breakcore is Breakcore, and is as old as Jungle. Actually played a mixed DnB/Breakcore/Jungle set Saturday, and some of the Breakcore tunes I got are from around 1993/1994. I got a rather big "old skool" Breakcore collection, and actually went to Berlin to visit Alec Empire, ATR, EC80R and the other Digital Hardcore crews around mid 1990´s. I stopped listen to it when it went to extreme political.

I come from the early UK Hardcore/Breakbeat (1991/1992), and then went into Jungle and then DnB. Stopped listening to DnB around 1997, but now I listen to it/DJ alot of DnB stuff again, mainly because of it has come "full cycle" and uses alot of the ragga and Amen-break stuff again. Love it!
Check out the man called ROUGHCUT from Bristol as well as Amit - wicked shit, mates!

Great Mix KION - loving it, bringing back loads of memories of dark car journeys on the way to the club.
I can fell the connection between this and Dubstep (especially the more technical Dubstep of Vex'd, Distance, etc) I feel the same space in the music, inspite of the fast drum patterns.

'bodyrock' was the end of the beginning.
then came twisted individual and pendulum's 'another planet'.

and then...

'slam'.

and for the record, i believe the success of 'x-ray' is wholly attributable
to the fact that more than two musical notes were used in its composition
in a season of utter monotone.

[edit] i nearly forgot about 'signal'. "watch this bass" ?
umm, yeah whatever.

fun fact: Dylan coined the term clownstep as a result of 'bodyrock'.
thanks, dude, for giving my pain a name,
so that i may make an effigy and burn the shit out of it.

--

in contrast, even the cheesiest of dubstep tunes (those having
more to do with grime/garridge than dub-ness, really) has not yet
illicited the arms-flailing-running-out-of-the-room-screaming
reaction from me, and that's a very good sign.

--

and regarding _space_, do yourself a favor by trying this experiment...
grab a few records in the 105-115bpm range (be dem old or new;
apparently this tempo is quite en vogue for about a year runnin',
but this used to be totally standard for downtempo electro,
until around '02 when Jive Electro stopped production altogether)
and a few dubstep records.
cue the dubstep @ 33rpm instead of 45 and smack it into the slower bits.
trust me
... it's the DANK.
