I thought beatmatching just meant matching the beats using the jogwheels and not a sync button. Pardon me for ever using the term. I wasn't trying to imply that I am an expert 'beatmatchist'. I simply didn't know that other models of CDJs don't show grids and have heard people use the term "beatmatching" with regard to CDJs, so logically I thought that what I was doing was called "beatmatching".

Thank you for enlightening me though I am forever grateful. I officially revoke any and all statements I have made about my ability to beatmatch.

How can you tell if the incoming tune is beat matched, without headphones, without putting the line fader up?

Do you just wack the line fader up on the incoming and then beat match? Especially since you said you can mix fine with the CDJ's screens covered, which would make your visual style of cuing impossible. I'm not trying to call you out or anything, just genuinely confused as to how thats possible.

Not quite sure what you're asking. I think you are confused because Terpit (nobody) quoted me cheekily as saying "DJing without headphones takes more skill imo." But that is taken out of context. I meant DJing without headphones is harder if you can see the grid visually.

Also I'm not sure what you mean by "line fader." Is that what I usually call a crossfader?

If I am covering the screen with a notebook, then of course i would have to use headphones to beatmatch. I never claimed that I could beatmatch without headphones and without some sort of visual representation of the audio. You obviously need one or the other unless you want the process of the beatmatch to be heard during the mix, which would sound pretty bad.

Don't think you're calling me out m8 I think this thread is just the result of honest miscommunication (although probably some trolling and egging on here & there).

The mixer I use has 4 volume faders (I'm pretty sure it's the DJM900nxs but I don't have it front of me), which I guess is what you're talking about, but I only use 2 since I only have have 2 CDJs. It looks like this when it's all set up:

My "career" as a dj lasted for about four months before I got enough of playing mainstream stuff (when I say mainstream stuff, I don't mean Skrillex, I mean something like David Guetta, Avicii, Martin Garrix etc.). I wouldn't have any sort of problem with playing any sort of tearout dubstep/dnb or underground stuff, but 128bpm mainstream house for several hours fucks you up really bad. Play something else than Vevo-stuff and *BAM* dancfloor is empty. Those tracks are also so damn easy to play it just seems stupid. Without touching sync-button ever, drinking beer with your other hand, and not even always listening to new tracks before a gig, you're still able to get things right enough for drunken teens since everything is exactly at 128bpm, has the same song structure and the same tonal color.

It was still good practice + some bonus income, but didn't really enjoy it much, apart from learning. We don't have many clubs/bars over here in southern Finland where it's beneficial to play non-mainstream stuff, and even less (if any) places where you can play dubstep.
