The UK vs. The US

born and bred in the U.S., lived in the UK for 2004-2005, and want to return if poss. under the HSMP programme within the next few years .

Differences:
- US people are generally louder
- UK has just as unhealty food as US
- UK has better prices on food, esp. fresh veg and meat, plus more local/small shops to choose from
- UK is MUCH easier to get around using public transport only, no cars
- UK takes more time off for holidays, and alcohol is much more the focus of said holidays
- Thanksgiving rocks, and I missed not having it (even cooked a thanksgiving dinner in the UK, which ended up being a large roast, featuring turkey...)
- Festivals are much more popular in the UK than they are in the US
- Summers when the sun sets around 10 p.m. are FABULOUS - LOVED sitting in the park and having a BBQ after work every night!
- Drinking whilst walking to a club is MUCH more effective pre-gaming - loved this in the UK, too
- UK banking system frustrated me to NO END, ridiculously old-fashioned and much less effective than the US banking system imho
- national healthcare was nice, tho I only had to use it once, screw the US version, care may be better in some instances, but not worth the cost as a whole imho

those are some of my top points.... could delve into politics and world opinions and such, but i'll stay away.

BTW - anyone in the SW want to ship me some good cider? I'm sick of strongbow and <3 cider!

I've had both and still prefer English ciders, ditto on the "too sweet".... they used to serve one at Horts and Arc Bar (before Arc Bar was shut down and Horts was re-furb'd?!) that was bright orange and quite tart, loved it but forget the name

Must make a trip to The Apple when I'm next in Bristol, plus bring home as much as I'm legally allowed

i think HSMP is getting phased out reasonably soon. the whole immigration rules are being replaced by the points based system like in australia. if you got in under HSMP i'm sure you'll be fine though

i think HSMP is getting phased out reasonably soon. the whole immigration rules are being replaced by the points based system like in australia. if you got in under HSMP i'm sure you'll be fine though

they just updated it to remove the MBA provision (automatic qualifying points if you have an MBA from a top-50 school), but haven't made any other changes - should stay around for the next 2-3 years, and it's a points-based visa anyway, so I'm hoping that the points get transferred over into the new points-based scheme when appropriate.

Also fingers crossed they won't change it for the next 2-3 years, as that's when I'd be making the leap, 4 at the most as then I start having to earn more and get less points for age .

If you know of any pending updates I'd LOVE to know, though

yeah i was more than hinting at my distain for romford
