it's not brand new by any means but its never evolved past anything of 'ahh that's cool!' status.

It's gotten bouncier and a lot more energetic, and therefor far more popular and people are purposely producing it instead of it just being the result of a session

Exactly.. now "far more popular and people are purposely producing it". So what is the harm in giving it a name? When there are dozens of tunes being made following a certain formula, it's maybe time to move on from half/double this or that and just give it a single definition.

Big tracklist! On the DL for sheezy
:5:
Call it drumstep if you like but anyone born before 1990 will call it drum and bass. I called this mix 'half-tempo' because it describes the nature of the dnb that is in the mix. I wasn't trying to invent a sub-genre.

yes and taking influence from other genres is just not acceptable! You either like DnB or you like Dubstep, but you must not like them both! You are either one head or the other.. make your choice, or feel the wrath of this forum!
save the sarcasm cos you didnt get what i was sayin. of course taking influence is fine, dubstep wouldnt even exist if it wasnt for that....

but the NAME is why ppl are cringing here. it makes is seem like its in dubsteps shadow. not to mention that its pretty unneccesary to package something thats already existed as something new.

No they won't and no they don't! No need to share my birthday with you, but I was raving in London to the very first Jungle raves and had to deal with you n00bs changing the name to Drum & Bass for some inexplicable reason!
And yes I think you named the mix correctly, but as I mentioned before, I think only one of the tunes (not sure which one) sounds like drumstep as we know it now.
Drumstep isn't such a bad name... not as bad as Garage surely!!!

were you at Telepathy in '94 then?
In fact am sure you don't even have a clue why the name changed! It was cultural rather than musical. Jungle had a bad vibe and the name DnB made it more friendly sounding to new audiences.
So can you tell me that you were there and living it during the crossover period?

lmao, i was 2 years old in 94, so i doubt it. but you were implying the switchover was as easy as a simple name change. jungle has never been the same as drum and bass. you can think what you want though

it's not what I think only.. it is what all the DJs and MCs from back then think! You have only been into this for a few years.. how can you possibly know anything about what happened in the 90s??? Losing a few ragga samples does not justify a name change! The chopped up amen has been ever present.
Oh what am I doing.. your a fucking child.. you haven't got a clue other than what you have read on a few blogs!

dont give me that patronising "im older than you so im wiser than you" bullshit. at least speak to me at the same level instead of acting like some twat on a high horse. and ive been listening to it for more than "a few years", i might be young but know how it used to be. plus most DRUM & BASS tunes dont even use amens any more. you must think its just jungle with a few extra drum loops lol bless. stop living in the 90's and get a grip you fucking oaf

The amen gets so chopped up that it's not recognisable anymore! And being a Dubstep promoter, I think it is hard to say I live in the 90s!
It is not purely because of your age that you are not on the same level, but the fact that you're only just allowed into clubs! You're an internet fan for fuck sake!

so drumstep should be saved as the name for that very formulaic half step tearout dnb sound

tunes like heist - survivor and crissy cris - kick snare drumstep mix

cuz those tunes sounded the most alike out of what I listened to in this thread

like what was referred to as "purposely produced"

the other stuff like steptoe (big tune!) is kind of wot do you call it 2 me.. obv dnb but breaking from the formula

the drumstep chico red is advocating for seems very constricted in what it will sound like - which, fair play - some people will want, much like punters who hear 'dubstep' and think doctor p and not pinch

half time dnb drums with those busy snare ghost notes, some woi woi, reeeeeeeee, whompwhompwhomp

and around and round we go

There will probably be a new movement in a few years where people started producing double-time drumstep having never heard of drum & bass.
