Yes, and what a shame... I'm sure it'll be a white label some day
Re: Joy O & Boddika - Swims (Swamp 81)
haha that was me when four tet dropped it at some point-skimpi wrote:love it when people play that, and everyone goes mental, and are like 'ohhhh swims! yeah my favourite tune!' and then you look at their faces when they realise its not swims, and they are like 'huh? whats this sick remix?'Choice1985 wrote:Yeah they straight up ripped it from another song. Not to sure if i like the idea of doing that and im sure if it wasn't joy orbison it would get slated. Anyways i still really like it and hope it gets released soon. Just in case i missed someone else posting this...

Hmm it makes this tune not nearly as cool to me, i thought they got that sample from some weird obscure place but it turns out the just sampled it off another record and slapped it on their beat without even changing it or messing with it.
Re: Joy O & Boddika - Swims (Swamp 81)
A good song is a good song, regardless of where the samples come from. I don't like the source, but Swims is one of the best tunes this year. IMO Joy O and Boddika turned something shit into something great.um4mi wrote:Hmm it makes this tune not nearly as cool to me, i thought they got that sample from some weird obscure place but it turns out the just sampled it off another record and slapped it on their beat without even changing it or messing with it.
Re: Joy O & Boddika - Swims (Swamp 81)
That's a fair point really.. I guess it just appealed to me from a producer's perspective to think they dug the sample up from somewhere weird, like on Elipses.. Which i guess contributed a lot to me liking the tune so much in the first place. But you are right its still a great tune regardless. I tend to like a tune more if i think its clever, but maybe thats just me being pretentiousback_beat wrote:A good song is a good song, regardless of where the samples come from. Sampling is sampling of course and there's nothing bad with taking parts from other tracks to use them in your own song in a new way.
But to me, this is very much on the edge. Sampling a club track to make a club track without changing or adding anything to the sample is quite poor.
Also, isn't the rhythm practically the same? Maybe I'm too harsh, but it seems like they just made an 2011 version with some trendy acid bassline on top.
Doesn't take away the fact that it's a banger though.

It is.um4mi wrote:I tend to like a tune more if i think its clever, but maybe thats just me being pretentious
haha, I'm just joking, but seriously, with all the remixing/rehashing/editing/sampling that goes on in electronic music, it really doesn't matter where samples come from, I personally don't think they've been lazy with it, they've just taken the vocal and built a track round it, happens all the time.

No. Rhythmically they are totally different , the only common thread is the vocal.q-t wrote:Also, isn't the rhythm practically the same?

so no one remembers acid house, no?
Re: Joy O & Boddika - Swims (Swamp 81)
Ok, only heard it on laptop speakers. Probably missed a lot of the rhythm due to frequencies not being represented correctly.nakedlunch wrote:No. Rhythmically they are totally different , the only common thread is the vocal.q-t wrote:Also, isn't the rhythm practically the same?

Is this directed toward me? Don't really get what you're trying to say but no one can deny that acid basslines have been a huge trend this year. Last year almost no one from the UK Bass scene used it in their tracks, and now everyone's raving about them.Capture pt wrote:so no one remembers acid house, no?
Personally, I think Swims could be labeled as a remix.

no it was more a general blanket comment to everyone - i was refering to the acid house of the 80s where you would find one lyric used on loads of top draw records, sometimes the lyric is barely changed, sometimes it would be chopped - but you'd find the same lyric used over and over in a short space of time - all those tunes were straight fire so not sure what the beef is with joy o and boddikas rehash of a lyric!
who remembers this lyric and the ton of rehashes of it?!

lolled @ 80's/early 90's sampling conventions meeting 2011's excessively anal ones. just dance to it
