Poetry didn't evolve as a way of communicating human emotion through language, that's bullshit, that's called conversation - it evolved as a form of storytelling. It evolved as an art-form to make it easier to remember stories and preserve our history before the art of writing. It does engender emotion obviously, but it engenders emotion by letting other people experience the situation you're writing/talking about and having them develop their own emotional responses. That's why Duffy is at the top of the art form even though her work is incredibly elitist - she has extended that concept through to the point where she uses a form that lets you construct your own poetry, and you become even more involved in the situation she's describing.
You can't just feed emotion into someone, being all like - "I am sad", "I am angry", which is basically what Jehst does if you take away the linguistic techniques:
"Eye of the storm, my tears fall as a torrential downpour
The flood, your death wish written in blood"
Strip it to it's bare bones that's simply - "I'm sad". That doesn't engender an emotional response like true art, it just makes me want to mock and belittle him.
You gotta feel sickness as I depict this
You never can escape that you’ve been a witness
Hunting the deer we became distracted
Disturbed by the way that our neighbours acted
Jumped to conclusions with sick delusions
Cos bulk intrusions had us confused
Began with the fusion of elements new
And strongly denied we’d developed a brew
To burn off flesh of an irrelevant few
A malevolent crew not benevolent (you know)
Stripped to its bare bones is simply - "I'm a tnuc". That makes me want to punch him in his face.
He never can escape that he’s been a witness
Posting this clip he became distracted
Disturbed by the way that his neighbours acted
Jumped to conclusions with sick delusions
Cos bulk intrusions had him confused
Began with the fusion of elements new
He strongly denied he’d developed a view
He turned to the thoughts of an irrelevant few
A malevolent crew not benevolent (you know)
So, so much real talk.
Lol at this bunch of middle-class white kids. Example did the best thing by dis-engaging from hiphop before selling out. Brother's got to eat, but he didn't drag hiphop down with him. That's real.
