There's truth in that for sure. I'd love to contribute something to this thread but when your mind is a cacophony of racing thoughts it's hard to know where to start :u:

Some of the most highly functioning people can be depressed, in fact, and I know there's substantial theoretic weight behind this, that the more highly-functioning people, intellectually and emotionally, are more prone to depression.

I brought africa into this thread off that back of an article i read earlier. It wasn't a counter point to your arguments, just somthing interesting with a slight link to depression. I don't think anyone is used it as the foundations of their opinion on the matter. or at least, I certainly didn't.

To be honest i didnt even read your paragraphs, as usual its a matter of opinion. I never said you were mopey however you do come across as being so. In any case i dont know you in person so its all assumption. I dont need to write an essay of self indulgent drivel to prove or expand on a point, i honestly believe some people are just wallowers and dont realise how easy they have it. If you think thats trolling then thats your opinion isnt it.

lol you're such a thicko

what does that even have to do with depression?? 'some people are mopers'... and??

depression is different to just being miserable

mothers enduring post-natal depression have killed their children because of it

mothers dont normally kill the infant babies because they're just being mopey

numbskull

views like those need to be aired and subjected barrages of abuse from all angles to expose them for the cacophonous shitstorm of regurgitated verbal diarrhea that they truly are...

this thread has become a shitstorm
if you've never dealt with depression maybe just allow the thread and leave it be?
Maybe i'm being oversensitive. I know it's a web forum, and should be open
Just chill though, if you don't know what it is don't mess with it
Let those of us who have continue to try to deal with it by reaching out to one another

you don't want to know anything basically that gets in the way of your blinkered view of the world

if you're not even going to take the time to read responses to your points why do you expect anyone to listen to you?

this is a discussion board after all not a post and not read the responses board

i wonder what other entertaining views you have...

there were many
all in the same ballpark though and all offensive to anyone unfortunate enough to have dealt with depression

all basically missing the point in exactly the same way as that point does

unless i missed something my response there covers all points raised....some people could do with cheering up maybe but thats not depression

"My argument with so much of psychoanalysis, is the preconception that suffering is a mistake, or a sign of weakness, or a sign even of illness, when in fact, possibly the greatest truths we know have come out of people's suffering; that the problem is not to undo suffering or to wipe it off the face of the earth but to make it inform our lives, instead of trying to cure ourselves of it constantly and avoid it, and avoid anything but that lobotomized sense of what they call "happiness." There's too much of an attempt, it seems to me, to think in terms of controlling man, rather than freeing him. Of defining him rather than letting him go. It's part of the whole ideology of this age, which is power-mad."

- Arthur Miller

what do depressed ppl make of that statement?

i don't know, not all "depressed ppl" are the same. That's not a bad quote.. i only dislike the finger-pointing generalizing question at the end of your post. If you want to convince everyone whose dealt with depression that they're wrong or whatever it is you're trying to say just jog on.
