Honestly when I'm at work and I need energy, because it's fast paced and gritty and keeps me energized. The ONLY part of Zomboy I really like is his brief 20 second melodic rifts in City 2 City and Game Time.

However when I'm home I listen to Skrux, MitiS, Koan Sound, Felxprod, Xilent, Seven Lions - type stuff. Melodic dubstep and DnB mostly..

..and that's when I'm not listening to metal ✊

fair enough. i can understand that from a metal perspective, but then I've never understood how people can enjoy listening to metal.

Dubstep really is the dance floor metal though. Even though we hate on skrillex, he started producing over 15 years ago and he got really famous as a lead singer in a metal band (From First to Last) and he was originally a guitarist. Zomboy was a metal producer (which by the way, is ALL about mixing and ZERO sound design), Seven Lions was in a metal band and he's even been quoted saying he doesn't listen to any dubstep when he's just listening to music.. Only metal. Even non-dubstep artists such as Zedd were metal artists (Zedd was a drummer for 10 years).. Krewella grew up idolizing All That Remains, and I've heard direct rifts of Killswitch Engage in their stuff (their song Human is a spitting image of "Arms of Sorrow" by Killswitch).

That's why "Brostep" exists, because those who transition from metal try adapting it into dubstep.. Only a few of us make it into the more detailed genres ;)

TBH as far as brostep goes, "classic brostep" (jesus christ that this is even a thing is stupid but I guess it is?) [think early Datsik, Excision, Doctor P] shows lots of influence from Jump-up DnB and that kinda shit.

After that we started seeing a Metal influence added in with like Skrillex and Bassnectar (TBH I dunno about that one, but he said that like psy-trance stuff and like Exhumed n shit were influences).

Now, we have like Rave-lazors/J-pop shit in dubstep because of like, I don't know Krewella or some bullshit (look I don't listen to that kinda stuff so I could be talking out of my ass here. The closest to that stuff I actually like would be like Barely Alive [hookjr goes on DSF] but I love their shit so maybe not. They use lazors a lot though.)

Oh no, someone with a different taste in music to you. I love Zomboy. I don't know why, I just do. It sounds good to me. As much as I dislike one direction I don't think they should all stop making music because I don't like them or think they shouldn't exist. They make people happy when they listen to them, and that's fine by me. The whole arrogant elitist position is stupid as fuck and makes you look like an asshole. Don't think about what you enjoy as the only music that should exist, and don't think of it as the best music around just because you listen to it, no matter whether it's 'real music' or not. Music is subjective and as long as people aren't forcing you to listen to it, then don't complain.

tl;dr - Listen to what you want, don't hate on everything else.

I've grown up with rock/metal and play metal guitar. To be honest i don't like rap/hip hop/r'n'b, so i can ask people who listen to it the same thing.

Yeah but with rap/hip/hop/rnb its all dance able. I like a lot of rock
I really like punk my parents were into like the clash, x-ray spex, the beat and stuff and then other rock like the jam, the specials, blockheads, stones, the madness

i just can't get my head a round metal. it just doesn't seem to have any swing, soul or funk. its almost mathematical noise to me. i can see the attraction through the skill required to write and play it, but apart from that it does nothing to me.

All in all i think dance ability, funk and soul are the biggest thing in music to me. Im yet to listen to any metal with that

Yeah i suppose you cant dance to it as such but you can headbang, windmill, go crazy in the pit, air guitar etc But maybe metal is not meant to be danced to. As long as there's some sick double bass drum drum patterns, ripping guitar solos, and heavy breakdowns i'm dancing on the inside.

Isn't the bold EXACTLY what dubstep is though??

With that said, the clash is OLD SKOOL punk man, though I don't personally listen, your parents have good taste.

I listen to everything - I was born and raised on country, grew up on classic metal and rock, moved to the rap-rock and alternative metal scene, punk, my best friend growing up got me into rap, I love some rnb, my #1 genre growing up was metal core though, and got into death core a bit. Whether you like screaming or not, I highly recommend taking a listen to Mariana's Trench or Meddler by August Burns Red just for the instrumentals. Absolutely no band or dubstep artists can touch their music theory IMHO. I got into music teaching myself how to scream and be a lead man, I grew up singing with a grand piano in my early years in my living room (father was a professional musician), and got forced growing up trying to learn how to read music and never did because no kid wants to be forced to do something. I have to say, dubstep is arguably my favorite, and most people don't understand how talented you have to be at it to make good dubstep. My past girlfriends don't understand, they're rock and metal at heart and I've been told by them that producers aren't real musicians, but I know for a fact that's not true and that what we have to do is difficult.

With that said, there's different types of metal. Some are caucophenous and some aren't waaay melodic. If you want good melodies and don't mind screaming I could show you a ton of songs of melodic value, or if you do I can show you other songs. Look up "This Ain't No Place For Animals" by Hands Like Houses (my favorite band) and there's no screaming and their guitars are crazy for melodies.

/digression

Also look up "Don't Look Now, I'm Being Followed. Act Normal" by Hands Like Houses. Go to the last minute and a half. Enjoy absolute fucking BEAUTY in a song. One of the most beautiful moments in a song, up there with the drop in "Satellite" by Oceanlab and the end of "Romance is Dead" by Parkway Drive, and the end of "Liberation" by Sound Remedy. To the point where when I make a stage name, I may name myself after "Liberation".
