if he has his knees on my shoulders then i would most likely have enough room/leverage to sneak out the back (i've been pinned like that many times and it's not a very effective pin at all), he should have his knees on the floor but all the way up under my armpits, then it would be a lot harder for me to escape (not impossibe though)

Hey, if it stops you getting hurt then i think its a good tactic... pride does you no favours
well it's obviously pride which is leading people to misrepresent themselves and say they 'talk their way out of it'.
i didn't say that was the case, i said that even if it was the case it still stops you getting hurt and that can only be a good thing. most times all i've had to say is that it's been a misunderstanding and that i had no intention of starting any trouble, thats not the same as saying "im very sorry mr big scary man, please dont hit me"
lol it pretty much is.
even so, if it stops me getting hurt i think it's a sensible course of action

well that would depend what you actually did to them, if it is reasonable force for self defense then it should be ok... Particularly for me as BJJ is "the gentle art", it doesn't cause any damage along the way but will get you to a position where you can cause major injury to a limb or choke them out if they refuse to back down, in a street fight i think choking is your best bet as it doesn't hurt or cause any physical damage but it will subdue them long enough for you to get the fuck outta there

The last place you want to be in a street fight is on the floor. Don't forget its hardly ever one on one. What do you do when you have someone in an arm bar on the floor and their mate comes along and kicks you in the face?

At least on your feet you can deal with multiple opponents more easily. Or just run away.

You can't be sure of that if it kicks off in the first place though. Say someone's hurting my mate I'm just gonna jump right on in there without warning.

its all academic anyway as i've managed to never get into a fight, more often than not im just gunna get out of there asap but if really dont have any choice but retaliate then im gunna take them out of their comfort zone by taking them to the floor, besides if more people do turn up to help their mate then i will be able to use bjj to get back up really quickly, then i can run the fuck away

I got myself into a really nasty situation a while back, it makes you realise how horrible violence is. I've got no formal training as such but when you feel your fighting for your life and family there is no holding the rage back. I scared myself more to be honest.

I really want to do some form of training though, I'm just undecided. Maybe a combo of wing chun and tkd would be interesting.

I want to be like ip man

Even Chuck Norris knows that BJJ is legit, he was a blackbelt under the Machado brothers before the UFC even existed, and if Chuck thinks it's legit then it's legit
