DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
I think it's a real shame that people who are looking at doing something for dubstep get met with such vitriol from the board.
However, I also think that the awards guys should have been as up front as possible from the beginning, as opposed to hiding behind email addresses and hyped-up blinged-out logos that don't really relate to what most of us feel about the genre.
A few thoughts:
Now that dubstep has gone in so many directions - people find it hard to relate to the "dubstep" word without thinking about the huge wobbly bangers. Not only that, but it seems people are having difficulty defining the smaller pockets of sound too - sub-genres are so often contested, that it's almost impossible to try and define things anymore without having to have an argument about it.
Surely whatever time and effort is going in to these awards would be better put in to something that has more benefit for the scene/community. We don't need a popularity contest that fuels the ego of producers that we can't all agree on. What we need is something mutually beneficial for everyone involved. SUrely the spirit of the scene has always been one of a mutual love for all things bass, not so much about hyping people beyond recognition.
Awards seems to be fundamentally flawed anyway - not everyone can win, there will always be people who contest the winners, and people who are bitter about not winning. not only that but so many people seem to be ever sceptical.
-
I don't really care whether or not this awards thing goes ahead - and if it's beneficial to some people, then who's to say it shouldn't. I do think though that whatever time effort and money should be put in to something better. Why not explore an enterprise that could be beneficial to us all.
Heck - speak to me, I've got stacks of ideas that I don't have time or budget to fulfull - I'll gladly steer you in the direction of a project that would be WAY more useful than an awards ceremony.
Good luck all the same.

Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
You guys are really proud of yourselves for picking on a bunch of young kids because they don't like the same kind of music as you?
Just let the people like their own bit of music and do their own thing in peace. You don't need to knock their books out of their hands when they pass you in the hallway.
I don't think some of you realize that alienating these people and being complete assholes to them has given them a rallying point within their scene. You're not educating people, you're not discouraging them, you're giving them a point of emphasis that "people just don't get us!".
Do you guys not remember what it was like to be a teenager? When a salty asshole tries to tell you that your music is garbage it generally doesn't result in an intelligent discussion and the youngster abandoning their musical interests.
In real life you guys wouldn't go to a show where these kids are at and chat shit with them.... you simply wouldn't go to the show and would go to one relevant to your interests. But since it's the internet you're going to their page and chatting shit to them and coming back here and acting like you're fucking heroes for arguing with kids who can't even purchase cigarettes legally yet.

the skrillex troll was comedic genius. it was parody and was lols all around. This is sad because people are attempting to disucss the merits within their trolls which in turn is fail on so many levels.

You seem very passionate about anti-trolling pkay, I know its a bit childish of us but its just a bit of fun mate.

quite the contrary.... I'm one of the bigger trolls on the forum at times.faust.dtc wrote:You seem very passionate about anti-trolling pkay, I know its a bit childish of us but its just a bit of fun mate.
it's fun when it's funny. trolling for jokes is great... the skrillex stolen tune bit was fantastic. It was parody. It was comedy.
trolling and being obvious and attempting to prove a point is sad. When it's blatant and the target sees your troll and a dialogue comes out of the troll it is in turn a failure. Even more of a failure when the original troll thinks this is somehow awesome, even though their target has become aware of the troll and the troll wall has been broken.
Our forum does a great bit of awesome trolling. Very unique and very creative trolling. When you try and troll a topic you actually have convictions about it's usually because you don't have the ability to argue your point. People who troll in political threads do so because they have weak arguments, those who do it in music threads do so because they really can't argue any merit outside of it's just their opinion.
Not anti-trolling just set the bar fairly high for acknowledging an awesome troll job. Also trolling for anything other than the lulz is instant fail. Trying to prove a point with the troll is /facepalm

Do I post the aim log from when I spoke to the guy behind the profile on here and facebook? Some interesting information about what the other promoters do etc? Was a pretty civil conversation to be fair so I can't see there being a problem?

Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
IMO the thing that annoys me about these awards is that 70% of the voters probably wont even heard of DMZ, Loefah, Deep Medi crew, Hessle Audio label, Hyperdub label, Zomby and other less commercial but amazing producers. So in my eyes only the 30% who do take the above (and more) into account are the real voters but obviously theres no way of cutting out the invalid voters so this is why the awards idea was kinda fucked from the start.
What I do like though is the DMA crew's enthusiasm and their love for music and dubstep. Personally anyone that likes dubstep is a good person as long as they have a broad understanding of the genre, not just Youtube-steppers. In a way as a dubstep DJ, I felt ashamed that I didn't know some of the producers that the crowd were requesting (Dub FX being one). I love that dubstep is evolving and everyday about another 1000 people, maybe more, are introduced to the dubstep sound. But on the other hand, what I love even more, is that I was brought up in the "roots of dubstep" generation where I first heard dubstep thanks to Loefah, Skream, Tectonic Plates and DMZ in 2006, and because I don't think the previous people I have mentioned will get the full respect they deserve, these awards seem to be sliding more towards the pointless side.
DMA will make profit regardless so for them its win win so I think thats why people on here think you are just trying to make some quick buck.
If only there was a way to make sure that only the valid voters with a proper opinion could vote. Imo the best producers are those NOT found through Youtube but because their sound is just so immense and their talent is clearly something to look into. Producers dont need awards to be recognised and respected. Their music speaks louder than words (not to be taken literally ofc)
Wow Ive wrote a lot....good distraction from revision I feel.
Peace out yo

Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
Well, the thing is the filthier dubstep artists are going to win because they are more popular - isn't this the point? I don't have a clue who will win, I can have a guess but I don't know for certain - these awards will show the people's favourite. I'm a big fan of the deep stuff, but at the end of the day these awards are a popularity contest and the deep, melodic dubstep we all prefer is still very much underground. It's like any other music awards, the most popular acts will win.

Re: DUBSTEP MUSIC AWARDS 2011
that's it at the end of the day really. it's like that for virtually every awards show though, for whatever genre. even though people might not consider it to be what's best or taking the roots into consideration that's not exactly what awards are for. if the brit awards or something took into account deeper artists then obvs take that wouldn't be winning...codeStep wrote:Well, the thing is the filthier dubstep artists are going to win because they are more popular - isn't this the point?
