Re: Maggie's Deed
thatcher shrank the state and made it possible for people to own their own houses by helping inflate house prices so far into the stratosphere no one can actually afford them without a government funded loan lol

Actually, she DIDN'T shrink the state, she just reorganised it:dubfordessert wrote:thatcher shrank the state and made it possible for people to own their own houses by helping inflate house prices so far into the stratosphere no one can actually afford them without a government funded loan lol
Here's some figures for you to check yourself as well: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog ... nding-1963 <<< shit holds true as far as I can see

Re: Maggie's Deed
it was sarcasm, of course she didn't shrink the state. the state of housing in britain is just one example. thatcher certainly shrank the size of the state's council housing stock. but 30 years later no one, let alone first time buyers, can afford the average house price without this http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2013/ma ... elp-to-buy (and even then!)test recordings wrote:Actually, she DIDN'T shrink the state, she just reorganised it:dubfordessert wrote:thatcher shrank the state and made it possible for people to own their own houses by helping inflate house prices so far into the stratosphere no one can actually afford them without a government funded loan lol

There's never more than about a 5% variance despite the massive sell-off of national capital...
right to buy becomes help to buy.
it'd be tragic if it wasn't so funny.

Glad your parents aren't rich or you'd be one of those peeps on made in chelsea. deserved it because of your parents initPerej wrote: Yes it is an 'accident' I suppose if you want to put it like that. It's subjective and a matter of opinion.
I am of the opinion that I am entitled to British healthcare more than lets say, a Polish immigrant because my family contributed towards the creation of the NHS and have been living on these shores for atleast 300 years. They have contributed to the economy of this nation for much longer and some of them fought in two World Wars.
I'm not saying people who haven't lived here for many generations should be denied anything (this doesn't happen anyway), but in the case of things like social housing or healthcare, Brits should take precedent. Seems fair no? Pretty sure they have a similar system in other countries regardless of ethnicity.
If you go to the Taj Mahal in India, they have a line for foreign people and a line for Indians, and Indian nationals pay a lot less. Mostly this is justified because many of those living in Agra are impoverished, but there are also a ton of more wealthy Indians who go in for less. It's just basic courtesy.
Just think it's common sense really.
Re: Maggie's Deed
Perej obviously did a great job motivating his family to these shores centuries before he even consisted of a single cell. Why should the lazy (i.e. stays in the comfortable place their parents shat them out) be given more by society than the ones that up sticks and move their family halfway across a continent to start a better life? Who deserves more for their effort?
Interesting comparison to be made with the "disruption" caused by #OccupyLSX and Thatcher's funeral at St Pauls today. The main thing thrown at Occupy was that they were blocking access to streets and causing the place to look a bit of a mess - there are now pavements closed off, bottlenecks of office workers trying to get through massive barricades on their lunchbreaks, shops shut and an enormous, ugly media grandstand in front of the cathedral. The funeral isn't until tomorrow!
If only this had happened 18 months ago..

Some people are better off dead. I think it's quite alright to celebrate the death of someone like, say, Hitler. (not comparing Thatcher to Hitler btw, just saying not all life is sacred)

Hitler was still a military leader when he died.SCope13 wrote:Some people are better off dead. I think it's quite alright to celebrate the death of someone like, say, Hitler. (not comparing Thatcher to Hitler btw, just saying not all life is sacred)
I wouldnt celebrate his death if he was a 90 year old who didnt even know who he was anymore. Not a good comparison anyway
