The Hipster Manifesto
Just wanted to share some thoughts I've been mulling over recently regarding the state of the local music community (particularly the underground electronic dance scene) here in Calgary.

In my honest opinion, Calgary's underground dance music scene was much healthier and vibrant 2 years ago than it is today.

There is no one to blame for the way things are...it is just the natural ebb & flow of a culture where change is the only constant.
However its hard to not wish things to be as they were once upon a time...when our city was recognized by many people abroad as being a North American hub for underground dance (particularly bass music)...not just another stop in the homogenized oneness of the continental, even global super scene.

As much as the scene has "grown", growth for the sake of growth...as we've seen is the case with the doomed capitalist system, is simply unsustainable.

I can't pinpoint exactly when things took a turn, but if you were a part of the scene between 2007-2010, it is undeniable that a massive change has occurred.

I remember a time when a true community existed here...not only amongst event goers, but amongst djs, promoters, & clubs etc.
When it didn't matter who or what style of music was being played.
When people were genuinely excited to be amongst other like minded individuals. When people were passionate to hear new sounds, and never came to shows with a preconceived bias of what should be played or by whom.

As any scene grows, change(both negative & positive)is bound to happen, and similar things have happened in most other major cities long before it occurred here.
But that was part of our charm here in Calgary...that small town friendliness / hospitality...and although it may still be present from an outside perspective, these traits have dulled considerably.

I honestly can't say I'm separate or innocent from many of the things I've said above...and this is not meant to target or call out anyone at all...more of a state of the union (or lack thereof) from my perspective within the scene.

I would love to hear opinions, or suggestions of how we could possibly rebuild something to be proud of here in Calgary...something beyond a culture of idol worship, & capitalistic commodification.

All I wanted to do was reply to this with "U Mad", since hes another promoter(whose elitist ways drove away all his business)...but I figured this was sad enough to leave alone lol

Yep.
I now have Alan, whom I've never met before, talking to me about hardstyle and donk on Facebook.
Somehow I think the 'Dubstep' he's into isn't going to be on the same level as me.
