Re: 130 thread

Post by ultraspatial » Sat Feb 01, 2014 12:50 pm

i think my question can be summed up like this: is this "movement" a genuine evolution of the nuum after all these years or it's more the case of trying to find some cohesiveness in what's going on today whilist clinging to the nuum's mythology? this sorta self-referecing to past nuum genres being the reason it's dissed ("it's just dubstep/grime/funky")

obvs none if this trully matters but w/e

like it or not, seems that 130 as the name has stuck, doesn't bother me i immediately know what someone's talking about if they say that. trying to retroactively stick a name on stuff will not work. at this point it seems to describe a certain style more than a fixed bpm.

The thing is people who aren't deep into 130 wouldn't know it's about the certain vibe not the bpm.

Why does it matter what it's called? Even if the BPM had all been the same, the aesthetics within just Keysound varies wildly as well, there would be no point in trying to come up with a better term to encompass all that. Why not just leave it at 130, however misleading that might be, and get on with talking about/playing/creating the actual music?

Also don't understand people's fear of trying to use a sentence or two in describing something instead of wanting to put a blanket label on everything.

"former keysound associate"

Do RA know what they're talking about here? It would be cool to get some more Beneath tunes on Keysound

Can't it just be seen as a branch of Garage or something. Keysound Garage. Like autonomic dnb.

I really feel think the same people who make this argument are same people who back in the day dissed early dubstep as oh it's just garage with fewer vocals and more bass. Stupid imo

No genre name makes sense really!

Drum & Bass - There's more than drums and bass in it. How is Digital Mystikz - Haunted not drum and bass? How do we know that it's roughly 170 bpm?

Garage - Did they only play one type of music in the Paradise Garage nightclub?

Dubstep - So much dubstep has no dub production techniques in it, and some of it even has vocals!

Rock & Roll - Yet to see the relevance of aggregated minerals to primarily guitar based music.

Hip-Hop - Very little hopping involved, if any.

Jungle - Most of these bods were from the UK, there's no jungle there.

Face it, nobody will agree on every genre name, and it really, really doesn't matter either way. People still take the piss out of the term "dungeon" but everybody knows what it means. It's the same with "130". It's just become the done thing to criticise any genre name on the internet, to try and look cool, and act like you're above any categorisation of music, when you've logged onto a site called dubstepforum

The people that say "x genre name is stupid" probably would've said dubstep is a stupid name where they involved in 01-02. EVERY genre name is stupid on some level, but it doesn't matter. If everybody knows roughly what you mean when you say it, it's a success.

Just ignore all the predictable mongs that come in and say "lol 130". People that aren't involved in the scene will never know, same way old people just all electronic stuff "techno".

yeah, this
it's definitely something new imo. but it's also too splintered to be something cohevise. plus you also get straight up grime things that get lumped together

I remember when benny first made this thread, told him to change the name cos I knew this was gonna come up. 130 just more concise than "a thread about basically the regular producers dusk & blackdown play on rinse".

regarding that, and my initial question. it's just not that cohesive in a way. think it's because now labels kinda form their own micromicroscenes around them, and it's weird seeing them lumped togheter. like you get night slugs/fade to mind tunes in the grime thread. and yeah, there's the influence, but that stuff wasn't considered grime (or "real" grime at least) before. and that's what i'm trying to get at; is it just internet culture or w/e you wanna call it or a forced attempt at forming something more cohesive under the banner of the nuum? or it's all natural, just the way the nuum evolves after a very strange period? or maybe something else entirely?

think this is better suited for dissensus

I'd say you're pretty close.

The evolution - that being, moving on but retaining certain aspects and influences from dubstep, grime, funky, garage - is there. Some people will feel the need to relate it to the mast they've pinned a flag to ("nuum"), but others will not.

The cohesion comes from an acceptance of evolution, rather than yearning for unlikely revolution.
