A friend of mine does the opposite commute - lives in Malmesbury and works at Bristol Uni. He takes the train... Malmesbury's got a pretty decent FGW service. The car journey from the centre of Bristol to the M4 is a bitch at rush hour. At 8am, I'd guess around 45mins to get from Bedminster to the M4/M32 interchange... I'd say you're probably better off making sure you're within walking distance of Temple Meads (or one of the branch stations at Bedminster, Stapleton Rd or Lawrence Hill)

But yeah, don't move to Malmesbury unless you're getting shacked up and settling down... it's very pretty, but boring as FUCK.

Bath's lovely, but you'll find yourself travelling to and from Bristol a lot. If you're not a student, the music/social scene in Bath can be a little bit, erm, conservative.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted by Swindon.

I guess your mate takes the bus or something from Malmesbury to Chippenham and then train to Bristol? That sounds like an idea. If I do go for the job, I'll probably stay in Malmesbury for a month or so before finding a place in Bristol.

@Kay: I'm moving from Bristol to Bath next year and not really looking forward to it. Bath is nice, its lovely to walk around but there's fuck all there. I asked a few of my mates who live there what the scene is like, and they all said "the bath scene is bristol mate". Plus its confusing as fuck; it all looks nice but its the same nice. The back streets look like front streets wtf.

I love Bath! It's goooorgeous. I was there like 2 weeks ago and there were posters for an Outlook launch party so I don't think the scene is totally non existent there.

Haha yeah, I've heard Bath's a bit like that. I've been there a few times (stayed there a week once). It looks like a nice place, but is probably a bit too expensive for what it is and you really need to be a student to fully enjoy it. Why're you moving away from Bristol? Seems like it'd be more worthwhile just staying there.

In every IT department I've ever worked, the Unix SAs have been complete and utter pricks... it's a cliché, but honestly, the have absolutely no social awareness.

One of them here sits one or two days a week strumming an out of tune guitar (?!?), they've got alerting on one of their servers which causes the same sound as the fire alarm to go off every hour or so and now one of them has started passing round one of those "Shock Roulette" games which plays the most ridiculously LOUD music... they must have played it 15 times in the last 20 minutes. I just spent 10 minutes apologising to people on the phone because it sounds like I'm in a fucking Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

I'm going to go over and kill one and hope the others get the message.
