@ambinate
Big track, in terms of what could be improved, everything is sitting nicely but the kick and especially the snare could use more punch, try to distort your drum hits or layer them with more, or even look into parallel compression. Try not to dwell on the volume of your tracks compared to pro artists as they have had their tracks professionally mastered.

@Thrilla
Definitely a keeper! i would say make a breakbeat/Jungle drop with a large sub and its on its way to being a banger. Judging by the drum rolls before the drop im sure thats where you were gonna go with it anyway?

@Weedcali
Pulsating tune ! the sub is so heavy, i like how you kept it toned down till the second drop, that midrange bass in the second drop need beefing up a little, maybe even just needs to be louder

@darkdubz
The intro was sounding sweet and then when the vocal came in it was not tempo synced, this threw me off a little, it seems that you have tried to construct the track around this but you can still tell its off, again the drop sounds like Datsik, there's definately an audience for this track, just sort out the vocal ;-)

Thanks everyone for the feedback, its much appreciated
Heres another tune im making, not mixed down yet though, also if your feelin my tracks follow my soundcloud as i will be giving away a free EP soon !

well, i basically keep getting all these suggestions with stuff i should do.. so far they are, breakbeat/jungle, heavy drop, chilled rest of the song.. i'm not sure what to do, i've tried something though.. it drops and it's got a dirty ass wobble, but it's still really chill. i'm not sure yet. i'll probably put more than one idea into it.

I could see that working also, but whatever you do dont rush the drop, try to keep the wobbles innovative so they compliment the interesting intro

i dropped the vocals in after i built the intro, and squeezed them into 4 bar sections, they sound alright to me, but i suppose i have heard it so many times now that i can't pick up on it, will sort it out and repost.

Problems with mixing the lead wobble

Post by TheHiddenProducer » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:19 pm

Hey guys,

I'm a regular on this forum and always search for dubstep production tips. However, I could not find any topic regarding my issue. That is, I can't seem to fit the wobble bass lead into my mix. I've tried compression and cutting some frequencies at around 160 - 320 hz, but it still sounds a bit funny. I'm going to provide a sample below and maybe you guys can give me some tips. Thanks for the help in advance!

@Thrilla
Even though im not a fan of the drop it still works, maybe try adding little drum fills at the end of each 4 or 8 bar on the drop to keep interest

@DreamThief Thanks alot man, I really appreciate the kind words
I love the intro to your track and the drums are siiiiick. very nice.

@RandoRando Thanks, Your tracks are very metalish, not a big fan of metal but it was an interesting change from the standard dub. I sat down for a little bit and attempted to mix the track, still could use some work but I'm not sure what else to do. I'm using Reason 4 with just headphones... :/

@nftfhx Yeah I'm kinda lazy when it comes to the drums especially the hats. I went back and did a little bit of change up to the drums and moved around, change the synths a little bit. Thank you for the input. :) I very much like the reverse intro on your signature track. Gave me chills.

So I finally mixed this track, below you will find the before and after versions of it. I brought everything WAAAAY down and did some eq work and a little sidechaining. I added some reverb to the snare and changed the wobbles around alot. I was gonna put some Sonic FX in it but the sounded off so I just left it as is. I still don't think it's sits right. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know what I could do to bring this out a little more and give it more depth

THANKS!!!! :D

@darkdubz - Loving the percussion on Speyside, good and dirty but crisp and punchy - kinda want that snare sample in honesty ;) Bass chops lovely too, especially the panned out bits. Honestly, I don't think you need the vocal snippets in there. But that's just my feel. In fact, I'd love to work on a track with you sometime.

@thrilla - You've definitely got a Mount Kimbie thing going on for some reason in my head, I'd pull the talky bass down just a notch

@benjoneslikewhoa - I think the problem with the mixed version is that your earphones aren't giving you an accurate enough picture of what's going on. The unmixed version of Hedgehogs was wayyyy overlimited, so the mixed version is a lot cleaner but sounding just a too thin on the bottom end. I'd try to work from where you started, try bumping the sub-bass around 60hz for the first bass harmonic, notch it at 100-110hz to let the kick through and roll over everything above 200hz. What are you using the limit the output in the end? Waves L1/L3? Ozone 4? You could also with perhaps a little selective stereo widening in the 7.5k - 15k areas to get your hats and upper end of your stab sounds to fill out the stereo field.

@deafblindmusic
by pull it down do you mean less talky, or volume wise?

the wobble itself is fine, but the bass underneath sounds too quiet on my (shoddy) system. compared to for example ikonika (which was playing before i clicked the link) it's like there's no sub at all.

Down just a bit in volume, you have an arpeggiated synth noise in the background that's interesting and I think you should showcase it a little more ;)

Just beef up the sub mate and make it with a longer attack and side chain to the kick and snare so they can cut through the mix.

Yeah, I HAAAAAATE trying to mix in headphones but don't have the cash to get decent monitors right now. I did ALL of this track solely in Reason 4. As you know it wont allow plug in support so my limiter is just an M-Class Maximizer here is a picture of what it looks like

I will try the things you suggested. All 4 of the bass synths use the same sub. I wonder if this might be an issue?? what is meant by notch? this term confuses me. I am pretty new to mixing. in fact I'm pretty new to dubstep. I've been doing hip hop for a while casually and have recently been listening to dubstep for about 2 years excessively. Maybe 2 months ago I decided to learn how to make it. My goal is to get these mixes to a professional quality. it's alot harder than I thought it would be. Very time consuming.
I do very much appreciate the input.
