TheIntrospectionist wrote:I think you both make valid points. In terms of the atheism thing, I like to make the distinction where the reasons for the outward displays of atheism are concerned because I don't agree with any and all criticisms of religion being labelled as 'fedora' and ridiculed in that respect. I think criticism of religion is important in the context of any discourse aimed at better understanding the universe, preventing harmful consequences of beliefs in question (e.g. childhood indoctrination), shaping/re-evaluating/improving social policy, relieving suffering caused by rampant superstition etc. This doesn't just go for religious beliefs but any belief system or claim made about the world. The important thing though is that, if anything is to be criticised or even subjected to ridicule here, it is the belief not the person. The displays of atheism shown by 'fedoras' in this thread (I think I have yet to see an exception.. If there are I haven't been paying close enough attention) are not only motivated purely by what I can only explain as the need to demonstrate intellectual superiority over others for the purposes of social desirability, but they are aimed at the religious person in such a way that aims to depict them as fundamentally inferior "sheeple". I think the phrase "enlightened by my own intelligence" largely sums up what I have a problem with. While I can and do see the funny side, it does disgust me when people talk like this. Another key distinction I've picked up on is the conflation of beliefs and intelligence or, basically, these guys seem to think 'unjustified/strange belief = stupid person i'm vastly superior to'. Some of the most intelligent people can and do hold a variety of weird beliefs for a variety of reasons that have little to do with intelligence. I guess I could sum up by saying the nature of "fedora" displays of atheism appear to be completely disingenuous and well deserving of the constant cringing I do in response to they shit they come out with.Genevieve wrote:Yet secure enough that they don't need other people's approval to carry themselves however they want. Everyone's berating neckbeards, My Little Pony, atheism even and fedoras, and they keep wearing them despite opposition. That takes quite a few more guts than being so obsessively insecure about your demeanor on a message board where your ego is reliant on calling other people 'fedoras' and carefully monitoring your own behavior to not be called one. Like the aforementioned decrease in anti-religious ramblings.wolf89 wrote:Except the fedora atheist type person does care massively what people think of them. They want to appear to be the intellectually superior person who won't blindly follow religion. They may appear to not care but that's more a case of appearing to brushing off what those people who are "below" them think to maintain their ideas about being so smart when they're actually massively flawed and probably really insecure.Genevieve wrote:Just look at how much the religion bashing he has decreased since the fedora atheist thing became a thing.
In part because of that, I respect some fat, neckbearded, atheist, fedora wearing brony more than the people that make fun of them. Even if they're whipped losers who've never seen the sight of a vagina in their 30+ years, they're still whoever the fuck thet want to be despite what people think of them. Whereas the hordes of internet dwellers that obsessively make fun of them or point out how 'fedora' someone else is, do it because they're just too afraid of people thinking they're anything like them. In other words, they care a whole lot more about what people think of them than bronies do.

Re: The Fedora Chronicles
There was a big anime fest at my university, and I saw my cousin with a group of cosplayers (?). He looked at me, and I just had to shake my head and walk away.
It was so shameful.
