Re: FINISHED TRACKS FOR FEEDBACK-- APRIL 2010
Hey guys, I'm new here (clearly), I'm 16 yrs old from Saskatchewan, Canada, and I've just started getting into dubstep.. I barely know much about it but some of the other Canadian guys like Excision and Datsik, and a few other artists.. so sorry if I don't give really detailed feedback as I havent listened to alot of dubstep before, but I'll do my best. So I've just completed my first dubstep track ever, I was hoping you'd give me some feedback
thanks.
bizmusic: this is cool, like the bass. but the sub seems off-key or something. the wobble is too 'dry', not reverb wise but it just sounds kinda empty with the rest of the track.
rekstep: disturbance force - cool vocals, but I can barely hear them, maybe boost some mids and highs in them, even some soft distortion to get them to stand out more. or if you were just tryin to get them to blend in like atmospheric its nice. Wobble is a bit energyless but cool 'riff' i guess you would call it. Good variation. I think the percussion could be a bit tighter, maybe more compressed or something.
rotten rasta - nice track but i think the bass sounds could use a bit more dynamics to them, like some waveshaping or whatever to get them a bit more bouncy? but whatever youre going for this is all just my oppinion.
lowpass: really awesome synth, cool sweeps and effects, tight percussion, overall sounding really good. Maybe you could add a few more sounds as variation or something.
And heres my track:

Been leaving a few comments through Soundcloud. Some really good stuff coming from here. Such a good resource...
Just stayed up to finish this. What you think? Bit of a genrefuck but weva... Still lacking some high tones and I'm shit at mastering so I apologise in advance...

@mexter dorgan : i like it, gotta say I enjoyed the first 55 seconds more than i did the rest of the song. good job nevertheless, good job on the sub, synths are sounding pretty good too
@+3 : wait; now this is fuckin sick man.. very original. sample is hot too, would love a 320!
puppet; also got that signature style of yours, im lovin it... sounds like you got your sidechaining down perfect, either that or just some crazy effects. idk exactly what but im diggin it! could use a tad bit more sub on the drop though
@mmockett : whaddya mean by genrefuck? if youre gonna label it then im pretty sure its dubstep, but im not one to slap stickers on stuff, it is what it is ya know? anywho, some pretty fresh synth sounds in there.
i'd put a bit more variation in on that melody, it gets a bit rinsed by the end of the song.
@spectrum1 : intro is dope, some sick arps you got goin on there. good drums too. beginning sample is pretty cool, gun sample could go
dont wanna come off as generic!
good job on keeping the track flowing, main problem I see with alotta wobblers on here is the track getting boring due to lack of variation no introduction to new synth sounds as the song progresses, but you dont have that problem.
kudos!

If anyone else could shed light on the bass levels in their respective listening places I'd appreciate it...

@Spectrum1:
I liked the high end synth at the beginning, you should probably incorporate that into the drop? Just my thoughts. I'm getting pretty tired of str8 wobbles though >.< Very well put together however, good work! Finish this up.
@urbannerd62:
This almost feels like trance mixed with dubstep hehe, like the vibes at the beginning with the whole violin synth or whatevs, but I'd throw in some more variation all around, as well as separating the kick from the sub like someone else stated! Good work though sir!

Props:
+Fade in is nice, would be fun to mix.
+Quality drum samples
+Smasher drop, deadly lowness
+ @ 1:53 YESSSSS i love that synth
+ Really well organized, you're quite a badman if this is one of your first tunes
+ Really diggin the staggered trancey background @ 2:22
Advice:
- i would spice up the drums in the intro a tad, theres a lot of ambience going on so a nice drum buildup (building in complexity, i mean) would set the tone nicely
- with a smasher (start-stop) drop, the buildup almost has to be of epic proportions, to really drive home the surprise of such brutality. adding more layers/ HP filtering / drum buildup will achieve this effect nicely.
- not really feeling the dry "yaeh" synth @ 00:56.. this is a personal opinion, so i would get more people to critique it... but i really think all your synths but that one are quality... if that was changed i would be digging this track so much more, but i know youre not writing tunes for me

-if you keep the gun sample @ 1:01, i would make it much more epic sounding, either by finding a different sample, using tube distortion or reverb
- the break @ 1:50 with the Borgorey synth feels a little awkward to me. a drum fill or HP filtering some cymbals would fill the space, or perhaps using a

-throw a dash of reverb on that snare!!

Overall:
/Welcome to the forum!!! You seem intelligent and polite, which is rare in a lot of 16 yr. old dubstep producers. Your attitude will take you far, its good to have friends in the business. Anyway, i am extremely impressed with this tune, since it is one of your first. While it doesnt really have anything truly unique about it, it is a GREAT starting point, and as you play around with synths some more, you will begin to develop your own trademark sound. All the elements of dubstep are here, so you're on the right track for sure, but have fun! Be bold! Break away from what you think is dubstep and push the boundaries! The breaks and surprises in your song indicate you have a good idea of what to do... explore every way you can to do something surprising and keep people guessing! Ill be looking forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Props:
+ i was sold from the start, with that street drummer groove, definitely had me wondering where the song was gonna go
+ your bass drops are out of this world haha, clean and beasty... felt my brain rattling around in my skull
+ very clean production
+ very impressed with your oldschool style, had me dreaming and head bobbing like a madman
+ your sense of groove is immaculate, i was supremely entertained with all of your beats and did not skip or want the song to be over at any point
Advice:
- this is a tough one to critique, since its not a style that i do very well haha
- i would *slightly* compress the sub bass on all the kicks (dunno what DAW you're using but its easy to do with some sort of audio merger/splitter), just to let the kick punch through that meaty bass when it needs to and keep the groove alive
- i would suggest matching the subbass with the stagger sound (@1:50) by having a really slow oscillation, so they dont grind against eachother (unless this was intentional)
- play this on a massive system and have people weeping

- i would throw a little reverb on your cymbals to give them an air that matches the space of the rest of the song
- i'd dash some reverb on the starting clunk beat, but im a reverb-holic haha
- i was expecting a reversed cymbal somewhere haha but that's just me
- buildups into the drops could be more pronounced, but that might kill the flow
Overall:
/just getting through my third time listening to it, and im still not tired of it. Really digging on this one, it brought back a lot of good memories. I would love to go to a show and hear this dropped, its been too long. I love this side of dubstep, and you are quite talented at producing it... this tune already sounds mastered! When i can dream and bob my head to a song, its a class tune in my opinion.

Finished this up last week but never got around to throwing it up here. I love this track, great shit to fall asleep to even (except for when the sub kicks in haha). Let me know what you guys like/dislike, it's all appreciated!
Thanks guys.

@Plus 3: loving both of the tunes, got a real nice vibe in both of them would be nice if they were a little longer though but thats maybe just me.
@Bassmagnet: The tune is the shit, nice builds, beats changes throughout kept me interested. Don’t know about falling asleep to it though kept my head nodding to the end.
heres a few of mine tell me what you think.
