I thought this was excellent. I mean, of course it was always going to be overblown and watered down in places - it's the most watched ceremony in the world - but to have that whole Industrial Revolution/Dickensian Urban Blight/Satanic Mills part was just utterly inspired, I was really surprised at the Tubular Bells/Exorcist section... great to see the country's horror tradition bigged up... Mr Bean made me laugh for the first time in about 18 years and they climaxed with TIM BERNERS-LEE. Yes, in front of the entire world we just planted a massive Union Flag on the World Wide Web. GWAN!
Oh, and GLASTONBURY TOR!
I was really worried after the Bond bit... I thought it was properly cheap looking, but I was totally won over by the end. Well done. Welcome to London!

hah i thought it was decent. The industrial revolution bit and the music montage were all on point.
Only thing that riled me was the assertion that 'even East London's Grime featured'. NO. Dizzee sang his electro/pop song for a couple of minutes, thats all.

They were more embarrassed about the current state of Dubstep than the current state of Britain.

big up Sky Sport NZ, 8 channels of Olympics in HD.
DPRK vs. USA table tennis, the North Korean dude is bringing the mad offensive counter game.
edit: commentator needs to keep his mouth closed a bit more.
edit2: hold tight the North Korean supporters in the crowd, good to see that.
edit3: The North Korean ran away with it 4-0

God I found it all so hard to watch. The first bit set in rural middle age countryside was unbearable lol the guys kicking a leather football around a 5m square patch of grass, loose hippy bitches swaying on a hill in the background (without ONE dreadlocked crusty rolling hard on acid with the poi spinny round things) and that little cricket section...jeeez
Then it improved for the industrial bit, although it still wasn't exactly all that. The way they cleared all the countryside bit out was just comedy, swear that could have been organised to look much more impressive than what felt like everyone helping bring a chair to the side of a village hall so it can all get tidied up quicker...
Then the queen/bond thing hurt, of course.
Then rowan atkinson was a badman, of course.
Then the music bit felt tacked on and clunky. Destroyed the whole chronology of it for me and made the music feel like an afterthought, tacked on a bit. Didnt get on with that (and yeah, god knows why dizee was front and centre...)
But in the end, I think I was expecting worse...just!

Every shot in this game has been a dribbler straight into the keepers hands

Missed the start, only started watching after the countries being introduced, the highlights seemed awful although i thought the climax at the end using 'Eclipse' was very cool

I thought the opening ceremony was awesome.
It was clearly never going to match up to China in terms of pure scale, but it never tried to, so it's completely unfair to judge it by that. It did something completely different. It had humour (something nearly always lacking in spectacles like this), it was tongue in cheek and it told a story. Some of the references in there were gloriously left-field too (Gregory's Girl? Kes?).
Sure some bits were proper cheesy, but fuck, have none of you ever seen an Olympics Opening ceremony before? Cheesy is pretty much the whole point.
The bit about the NHS was great, I saw it as a big fuck you to Lansley/Cameron.
Decision for who lit the torch was a great touch too.
And the girl with the big hair who was texting the black guy (I think) then dancing with him in the house that the internet guy was in. That girl was ridiculously hot.

The actual lighting of the cauldron was brilliant. Pagan ring of fire business, that's BRITISH... all that was missing were some naked, cavorting Druids painted in woad.
