make tunes>send them to friends>get feedback>more work on them>send them to a local dj to see its response in a local club while you're there watching>refine tunes some more>send tunes to one specific big name dj that plays a similar sounding style>see if you get feedback>if not, send to another big name dj>go to parties. go meet people and drink with them. if you don't live near a big party, get a job and get your shit together.

and surely the above statement goes against having your own sound?
don't get me wrong I hate generic bullshit as much as the next person but it is ultimately subjective and I like some wobble tracks and some deep tracks as well as some dark tracks...i'm sure we all do but maybe not all the same ones..
The new caspa cd is fucking terrible imho but i played it at work today late (i work in hmv) to sell it and someone loved it and did...
there is also a fraternity of dubstep now that is very hard to break into by doing it the hard and morally correct way...i have a friend that i swear is incredible but he still has nothing released..

i've had a discussion recently with a really big dnb producer. he's someone that everyone would know instantly, and he was saying to me that "i make about 5 tunes a year. over the course of 12 months, i refine those tunes and even delete a few. if i feel that one or two of those five tunes has a life of its own i'll test it out some night. the others noone will hear. they haven't lived enough yet."
you have to let others tell you you're original.

and to me as an FM radio DJ, id rather only deal with local dubstep as much as possible. it was, and always has been a local sound. then it went global kinda, and its taking it a minute to die to down back to a more local thing maybe because only a small amount of people elsewhere besides london bristol nyc LA san fran got into it, and its taking time to build on the local level. people just need to relax and let the music speak for itself! let people release what they want, if its shat its shat! and if the djs dont play it, you wont hear it!
dubstep HAS to be a local thing before its a worldwide thing unless you are in the middle of nowhere.this is better...

so when people say you need to be original, they're really saying, "Be original enough that based on what I'm listening to, its different....but not different enough to alienate me while I listen to it."
Be a bit more fair here.....you don't necessarily want originality. You want originality within a box. Originality within the set of parameters you are comfortable with. Because too original gets you as many props as the formulaic ones get.
I mean what was that quote....something about you'll know when you're original because you'll have to ram it down peoples throats....isn't that a sig here? Doesn't that say something about the fickle relationship with originality?
Make what you want. Listen to what you want. If you don't like it, move on.
