I wonder if John Malkovich could play a Ninja?
Can John Malkovich play anything other than John Malkovich?
Probably not. He convinced me for some time. My suspicions arose once 'Being John Malkovich came out' :D

same director, paprika is a nice visual brain melter. millenium actress is one of those ones that starts off confusing but slowly, unravels its self. really well written story too- looked nice and had depth.

saw some ninja's posting about this film saying it was sketchy as fuck, so i decided to watch it. Have to agree with you guy's it did scare the shit outta me...especially those head banging demons. The movie is very confusing but after the end scene it's pretty apparent what's going on, here's my attempt of an explanation so if you dont want the movie spoiled don't read on.

The important question is obviously how it is that Jacob can be living two lives and when these things even happened to him, if they did at all. At the end of the film we find out that he has actually died in a hospital right after he was killed in Vietnam, so did he actually live that life with Jezebel? I think not, but the point is that we are presented with a picture of Jacob's journey to the afterlife as he holds on to his real life. His dead son (angel?) wants him to let go and join him in heaven but Jacob holds on a bit too long, and at first he fails to make his peace with what has happened in his life (death of his son, war, any number of other things). Because of this he is haunted by demons, etc. until he finally makes his peace and lets go of his life shown in the symbolic scene of him and his son walking up the stairs.

Of course there is also the issue of "The Ladder", the drug placed in the food supply of Jacob's squadron. This concept ties the movie together and gives more relevance to Jacob's mania, nightmares, spiritual journey or what have you. The movie takes us between two worlds: a spiritual world, and a real one, and Jacob's Ladder represents his journey to freeing his soul and making his peace. hopefully this makes sense to the people that watched the movie and don't get it.

I've just finished watching two films about revenge. In both it all went horribly wrong, however in the first film the one seeking revenge received a brand new puppy (hollywood) in the second film (Korean) all seeking revenge died in a most brutal manner.

Both were rather boring but surprisingly neither featured John Malkovich. Consequently i enjoyed both features.

Mr Vengeance isn't boring. I honestly can't think of a boring moment. Way more brutal than Lady Vengeance and Oldboy too.

It was boring in a good way. Maybe boring is a little strong. It was very dry i should say. Oldboy i found far more exciting. Mr Vengeance needed some suspence, it was shocking in a gory way whereas Oldboy was shocking in a what the fuck your shitting me way.
I enjoyed Oldboy a lot more. Lady Vengeance i didn't really care for at all.

I suppose I know what you mean. Was there even a soundtrack for Mr Vengeance? I remember it being really quiet and ambient, except the factory scenes, probably to get you more in to the main guy's head. But yeah, Lady Vengeance was pretty shit. Mr Vengeance had the least happy ending though, was pretty fucking brutal, whereas Oldboy was more psychologically brutal. Lady Vengeance was just a bit meh.

It did have a soundtrack but it was very ambient, barely even noticeable. I guess because the main character is death it would be wrong to have a blaring soundtrack. Like you said it helps you get inside his head.
Brutal indeed, the part with the cutting of the cruciate ligament made me squirm :o

I prefer the alternate ending tbh. it doesn't have the staircase walk etc at the end, he's in that blue house and scream who are you then jezzy appears saying @I've been waiting for you jake' and walks forward and then has a cloth on her head then he pulls the cloth off and it's him underneath, smiling .

Your explanation is pretty much spot on. I found the ending made the film too straightforward though. Basically that one quote sums the entire plot up.

'If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. If you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth. '
