Well that's my plan tbh

But yeah, I'm not saying make shitty tunes to succeed, but even if you make fresh, brilliantly produced songs, you're not going to 'make it' without some serious luck.

What does "making it" mean to you? Nobody expects grammy awards, producers expect some people who love their songs, get in top 100 on online music stores, local bookings, get more listeners, more shows, better results.hutyluty wrote:you're not going to 'make it' without some serious luck.
Of course there are producers who are top notch and yet didn't make it, that can be for various reasons.. but most likely it's because they gone too much the sound designer route and forgot how to compose a song. I know a lot of producers who I respect and love the music they make, but I couldn't listen to their music in my car, cause they lack melody/too repetitive etc etc list goes on. And the opposite side, when good producers copy the "mainstream" artists too much, that their originality is gone.
I myself like to ask for my sister's advice when I'm making stuff, cause I tend to work on sounds that she doesn't even care about or notice in a tune, yet she dies for a basic flux pavilion synth. Don't forget you're making music, you can have 100 filter chains and paralell distortions, at the end of the day melody will be stuck in their head, not the small details that you work your ass off for. You will get some desiring words from fellow producers, but if you want to "make it" concentrate on the music part first, and polish it. Not saying you shouldn't experiment and push your limits, but don't forget that the end of the day we're making music, not "noise". Big ups to Noisia in that regard, their sound design is awesome, even skril mentions them in the interview, I myself grown up on their and Spor's tunes, yet I don't think they "made it". They make shit they enjoy, I myself fucking enjoy every tune they put out, but the average people only hears noise, and there are more average people than producers. You're making music for those people (if you want to 'make it') not for the producers.

That's what I love about him. He's on tour, playing a show practically every night, and he still makes more tunes than most of us do! Say what you will about his tunes, but it sounds to me like he genuinely loves making music.

Thank you render, that's exactly the message I wanted to pass with my posts on this thread saying "we're musicians, not tecnicians". That's exactly my thoughts.
Rest of you, listen to what he said if you really want to make a career out of music. Probably the best theorical post I saw here on DSF.

Re: iZotope Artist Interview - Skrillex
they have made it in our hearts, and in many tech lovers heart, but then again, whats the part when you say someone made it? Noisia has ~250k likes, skrillex has ~4m likes, drake has ~23m likes. I know it's just numbers, but those numbers are really important in today's marketing. So who made it? I'm trying not to be subjective, cause I would rather kiss the ass of anyone from Noisia than skril or drake, but you have to admit that u need to make compromissions in order to "make it".Huts wrote:pretty sure noisia has "made it", and their shit is among some of the techiest stuff out there. I can't really say anything else, cause I'll just repeat myself. You guys can go ahead and argue if you like, or open your daw and start making some music. I'm not even reacting to the bro comments, stop cryin already and make/listen music which you like, and stop wasting ur time with threads u have no interest in.

"Maybe we should do a drumnbass track." - Noisia
Re: iZotope Artist Interview - Skrillex
Noisia gets to tour and make music for a living. They're are an iconic name in the DnB scene, and people shit when their name is on any bill. That to me is making it. Even grammy winning skrillex doesn't have his music on cycles on MTV/VH1/KissFM, yet you consider him having made it big. Comparing making (largely) instrumental dance music to the bubblegum pop shit you hear on the radio is comparing apples to oranges, surely you can see that.

Re: iZotope Artist Interview - Skrillex
This discussion has got pretty interesting now.
With regard to the musician vs technician, i personally have the ethic that the two go hand in hand. I want to make music with great melodies and also with awesome sound design. I rarely use presets - maybe for a pad or string, but never for a bass as the sound design is one of the most enjoyable parts of making tunes. I'm hoping eventually i'll get good at both and develop my own distinct sound and be able to write some great music with it. I honestly don't think people like Datsik, Skrillex, Noisia would be where they are today if it wasn't for their technical skills, as they each have the ability to create some really unique basses.
With regard to 'making it' - I don't want to break into pop or the charts. My goal is fairly simple - to be able to play my stuff out to people that enjoy it, and make enough of a living so that i can make music my career. I want to make tunes that i like and be able to play them really loud.
This is what i call 'making it':

And not making it:

To me, "making it" is being able to make enough money off of music to live off of.

Re: iZotope Artist Interview - Skrillex
I'd prefer to live off of my music, but I'd honestly be satisfied if I could just support myself and be able to make music in my free time when I grow up.
