When I was still a lurker I read this great thread called "the growl thread" in production about how to make the skrilly growl bass. Hilariously turned into a huge religion pissing contest.

It started with this guy who claimed everyone elses growls were shit and his were brilliant, cus he got booked to play shows and the promotors told him his growls were on point or something.
