Your first batch of songs WILL suck. Deal with it. Learn from them and keep going.

umm, not using spell check when posting new threads?

Just kidding. I don't think its that bad of a thing to emulate when you are first starting out. Its how most people do it, and its useful for learning technique and conventions. But the trap so many people fall into is not moving beyond that stage and applying the lessons learned in the emulation phase to develop their own style.

Learning which pieces of equipment or software best suites their workflow is crucial, but people also need to realize nothing is really "better" than anything else and it all comes down to the creative input of the artist.

A big pitfall that I see newbs fall into is that they often only listen to a very narrow and specific style of music, and their output reflects this to much. I think people should spend a lot of time listening to a broad range of musical styles. It's the cross-pollination and hybrids that push styles forward and keep the music evolving.

Turn down your hats.

Don't try to be Rusko.

Don't post in the forum unless you've googled and searched already for the answer

Remember bass AND space...not just bass...with wobblez.

Too much additive EQ'ing? Making things too loud in general. Too much reverb and delay on everything. All shit I did for a while.

it sounds very basic, and in needs of little amounts of effects. use a bit of reverb and delay but don't overdo it. also, try changing the adsr envelope of the strings in the background. it sounds exactly like a preset on one of those old yamaha keyboards. turn down the snare a bit also
