sydney. last weekend of an Oz tour, so i was knackered anyway, and then had 3 gigs and 3 flights in the space of 48 hours (including going to NZ and back). so i felt like shit. the warm-up DJ pretty much cleared the floor (don't know why, he played a reasonable set) and then when i came up, the entire club emptied out (again, don't know why, i wasn't trainwrecking and i was the headliner so surely they knew what kind of set to expect?) eyes bleeding with tiredness, empty club, the promoter (who was paying me a LOT) comes up to tell me i don't have to play the whole of my allocated set. i stop playing records, they turn the lights on and close the club.

berlin. again, completely empty club. as in, literally. no people. girlfriend fell asleep on stage.

london, rhythm factory. travelled 4 hours to get to london to play a charity gig, arrived and found it so empty that they had closed the room i was due to play in. went home.

dresden. no monitor, only one CDJ and it was a CDJ100.

anywhere else, about once a month: any gig where the decks are fucked, or the needles are fucked, or there are no decks/CDJs/monitor/etc. or some twat with serato can't manage to plug it in during their own set, and has to fuck about with the mixer during the sets before and after theirs

Seriously setspeed those are all terrible. I feel for ya man.

I don't have one in particular but years ago I ran a night (a Tuesday nonetheless) at a club here in city and any time it was really dead was the worst. Spinning for at most one person is bad enough, but then to be there all night and get up for work the next morning got old quick.

I got contacted by this promoter for an Halloween party...

The party is taking place in a nice, huge loft. Ok, I like loft parties so why not ? They can be wicked. The problem is that the "rig" is basically his pc speakers. The promoter refuses to pay money to rent proper equipment. He's already paying for booze and he refuses to spend more. So, no proper low-end. No turntables, no cdj's, no mixer : he expects his dj's to bring the equipment.

At the very last minute, I learn the dj's were not going to get paid.

ah yes i've done that one too! you spend half the month designing promo shit, going round town putting up posters, standing outside clubs handing out flyers at 5am on sunday mornings, and for what? so you can spend thursday night playing to an empty club, getting 4 hours sleep before work on friday and losing about half a week's wages in the process

These are the very reasons I didn't want to do house parties/raves

And taking you're own equipment into a house with plenty of booze and no regulations is possibly my worse nightmare

I like my stuff and it would kill me to see it get wasted because "someone thought it would be funny to try and spin themselves on the deck" or some shit like that

I got a bit of a bad one...

- No Monitors
- 1970's Video Mixer, 2 faders, 1 graphic equaliser on the output
- Heroin OD in the toliets (about 2ft from the decks)
- Copper standing with me at the decks all night to stop people going in the toilets
- frenzic officers walking past the decks with various clear evidence bags with bloody tissue in
- Bar was about 70% full of friends of the deceased
- Some guy waved his knob at me on his way out
- Didn't get paid

played a set where the headphone jack input was fucked, so if you continuously waggled the jack around for a while you would get little flashes of sound amidst the buzzing noise you get from ill-fitting jacks. Nightmare. Reso was on after me and seemed to be fine with it :D professionals eh
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

Played at a party, system was cranking, but the mixer was something else. Some allen & heath thing that we'd never seen before. We were playing unmastered tunes off CDs and vinyl, but we didnt know where the channel gains were to keep shit even, so my friend decided that moving the master fader instead would suffice. Until we forgot it was up, and dropped goblin and it was about 3 times as loud as the tune before it and everything started distorting.
And one of the decks wasn't grounded, and the both skipped like hell - some old 1200s that looked like they had just been pulled out of someones garage after 5 years.

And I got way too high. It was pretty traumatising.
